Federal University of Ceara
The main research areas of our group are:
Disability and Functioning concepts according to the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health – ICF/WHO are our main research outcome. We also discuss, train, and supervise the application of instruments such as the World Health Organization Disability Assessment Schedule – WHODAS and the Model Disability Survey – MDS.In addition, our research group also makes efforts to assess the impacts of diseases of interest in the field of public health on functioning and disability at the population and individual level.
Techniques you will learn during your program here:
Throughout 12 weeks we will start by studying the evolution of concepts and explanatory models of disability over time to the present day. After that, we will move towards mastering the main tools for collecting data on disability at the individual and population level. Then, we will study and discuss the design and execution of disability studies. The next step will be based on mastering the data collection and analysis process in disabilities and functioning. Finally, the planning and implementation of disability / functioning health indicators will be discussed.
Curriculum
Fellows will be supported to settle down into their new environment (find appropriate accommodation and locate amenities). Desk space will be allocated.
Depending on the interest and mastery of the Portuguese language, fellows will be able to attend / follow master's and doctorate courses in the programs offered by the university.
We will arrange on the first day an initial meeting with the fellow to discuss the objectives of the training. The twelve-week curriculum will look as follows:
Weeks 1-3: Understanding our work and the concepts that we work on: Throughout these 3 weeks fellows will be introduced to our research structure and to the graduate programs that the supervisor belongs to. A lecture will be organized for the fellow to introduce himself, describe his place and institution of origin, his objectives and research that has been involved.A virtual meeting will be organized so that the Fellow gets to know the researchers and projects of the Brazilian Network for Research in Functioning (Rede Brasileira de PesquisaemFuncionalidade - https://rbpf.ufc.br/pt/).During this period, fellows will conduct a guided study on the evolution of the concept of disability to the present day, culminating with the concepts in use among our research group and recommended by WHO.Facilities, amenities, cultural and leisure options on the coast of the state will be presented to the fellows at this time.
Weeks 4-6: Mastering tools: Throughout these 3 weeksthe main data collection tools on disability and functioning will be presented, discussed, and trained with the fellow. Specifically, the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health – ICF/WHO, the World Health Organization Disability Assessment Schedule – WHODAS and the Model Disability Survey – MDS will be worked on, as well as other alternative instruments. If it is the fellow's wish, the writing of a paper can be started at that moment to be completed in the next weeks.
Weeks 7-10: Hands on: Throughout these 4 weeks fellows will be asked to write a project aiming to collect information on disability to be carried out possibly in Brazil or in the country of origin. Fellows will not be committed to running the project but will be trained under supervision on how to design and run a disability study.Fellows will be offered opportunities to experience data collection and analysis in the various projects developed by the supervisor.
Weeks 11 and 12:Strengthening the partnership: These last two weeks will be reserved for the discussion of health indicators on functioning and deficiency. The paper should also be finalized during this period. In addition, partnerships with fellows in multicentric research projects will be discussedseeking to reinforce the bond of cooperation in research created.
