University of Debrecen, Hungary Institute for Surgery

Main Areas of Interest

The main clinical areas of our group are:

As one of the largest institutions in Hungary, with a hundred years of history, our mission is to always be at the forefront of the diverse fields of patient care, teaching and research.

Our various organizational units can provide complex, personalized care in the fields of general, gastroenterology, thoracic, transplantation, oncology and vascular surgery, among others.

The extensive experience and up-to-date knowledge of our employees guarantee the high quality of patient care and the use of the most modern surgical methods.

As one of the largest units of the Faculty of General Medicine of the University of Debrecen, our institute plays an important role in inpatient and outpatient care, as well as in the graduate and postgraduate education of Hungarian and foreign medical students and residents studying at the clinic. We regularly organize further training courses for specialists and candidates for specialist doctors.

Our employees carry out extensive collaboration with domestic and foreign partner institutes, which participate in numerous research projects and clinical trials. The effective research work of this institute regularly produces publications in prestigious journals, diploma theses, and PhD theses. We carry out our daily activities on the basis of a strict and regularly checked quality assurance system.

The Institute of Surgery, as an endocrine center, participates in the surgical care of thyroid and parathyroid patients in Eastern Hungary.

We can treat the entire spectrum of benign and malignant changes of the thyroid gland and parathyroid gland. Today, the surgical solutions are lobectomy and total/near-total thyroidectomy in accordance with international guidelines. During the operations, we use a modern ultrasonic cutting coagulation dissector for almost all operations. With the help of the preparative technique, the preservation of the vocal cord nerve is of prime importance, and the incidence of its damage is low. As a center, we operate on recurrent goiters at a higher than average rate, as well as perform complete surgeries.

Thanks to the cooperation with the thoracic surgery operating within the institute, we also successfully operate on large retrosternal goiter, and if necessary for the sake of radicalism due to a tumor progression, they also participate in the care of the pharynx, esophagus and trachea. It is also possible to use radio-guided surgery in cooperation with nuclear medicine, which is performed during the treatment of patients with hyperparathyroidism and recurrent thyroid tumors.

Surgical techniques you will learn during your program here:

  • Thyroid and parathyroid surgery (open/minimal incision)
  • intraoperative recurrent laryngeal nerve preparation, detection by nervemonitoring
  • intraoperative parathyroid gland detection (autofluorescence, indocyanine green test, parathormone test)
  • management of intraoperative malignancies (intraoperative fast frozen section)
  • radioguided surgery (RGS)
  • operative techniques of advanced thyroid/parathyroid malignancies

4-12 weeks curriculum

After the initial meeting to understand the objectives of the visiting program, the trainee will go through a formal induction process (safety, laboratory practices, personal welfare). The fellow will be asked to submit immigration documents, travel, health, and liability insurance for review.

The fellows will be fully appraised of all activities of the Department and will interact and closely work with the group members. Depending on their interest and the duration of their stay, they can contribute to a manuscript.

The fellow will be allowed to attend group meetings and other academic activities within the School and the University, including lectures, workshops, conferences, e.t.c. They will also be encouraged to give an oral presentation of their work at a group meeting at least once before completing their visit.

Towards the end of the training, there will be a meeting with the fellow to discuss plans to publish their work (if enough data is collected) or disseminate their findings at a future conference.

Throughout the training, any particular challenges or requests of a fellow will be fully considered to ensure a responsive, relevant, and adequate training plan is developed for them.

I had great time in Hungary, thanking my mentors  Dr Kovacs and Dr Gyory in surgery clinic, first of all.

My host mentors did deal with me so nicely. On top of that the fellowship programme was delibaretely planned and my maximum benefit was assured. I did participate so many surgeries as planned before.

Since my programme was only for 15 days, not the conference but I had chance to network with med students and doctors there. Many organisations and events were already planned for me before my arrival and I did my best to be in most of them.

I defnitely believe that I had my time spent in most efficient way possible. My hosts were great and every single detail of my time during fellowship were thought and planned. We had a dinner together with mentors and some other Drs from clinic for instance,it was great time.

I was taken to nearby touristic town Hortobagy as well. I am thankful to the mentors and all surgery team in Debrecen University Hospital.

Cost was not high. Other than what I paid for fellowship programme and my plane tickets to Debrecen, I spent around 550 Euros in 15 days. 300 Euros of this is for the room that I rented. I could easily say in 15 days what I spent in Debrecen for my personal needs is around 250 Euros. It is a quite friendly amount.

I did stay in a room which has kitchen in it, It was 15 mins walking distance to hospital but most of the times I used pyblic transportation. It is very easy in Debrecen. Nothing to worry about.

Once again, I thank my mentors and Trialect company for my great fellowship experience.
