University of Debrecen, Hungary Institute for Surgery
The main clinical areas of our group are:
As one of the largest institutions in Hungary, with a hundred years of history, our mission is to always be at the forefront of the diverse fields of patient care, teaching and research.
Our various organizational units can provide complex, personalized care in the fields of general, gastroenterology, thoracic, transplantation, oncology and vascular surgery, among others.
The extensive experience and up-to-date knowledge of our employees guarantee the high quality of patient care and the use of the most modern surgical methods.
As one of the largest units of the Faculty of General Medicine of the University of Debrecen, our institute plays an important role in inpatient and outpatient care, as well as in the graduate and postgraduate education of Hungarian and foreign medical students and residents studying at the clinic. We regularly organize further training courses for specialists and candidates for specialist doctors.
Our employees carry out extensive collaboration with domestic and foreign partner institutes, which participate in numerous research projects and clinical trials. The effective research work of this institute regularly produces publications in prestigious journals, diploma theses, and PhD theses. We carry out our daily activities on the basis of a strict and regularly checked quality assurance system.
The Institute of Surgery, as an endocrine center, participates in the surgical care of thyroid and parathyroid patients in Eastern Hungary.
We can treat the entire spectrum of benign and malignant changes of the thyroid gland and parathyroid gland. Today, the surgical solutions are lobectomy and total/near-total thyroidectomy in accordance with international guidelines. During the operations, we use a modern ultrasonic cutting coagulation dissector for almost all operations. With the help of the preparative technique, the preservation of the vocal cord nerve is of prime importance, and the incidence of its damage is low. As a center, we operate on recurrent goiters at a higher than average rate, as well as perform complete surgeries.
Thanks to the cooperation with the thoracic surgery operating within the institute, we also successfully operate on large retrosternal goiter, and if necessary for the sake of radicalism due to a tumor progression, they also participate in the care of the pharynx, esophagus and trachea. It is also possible to use radio-guided surgery in cooperation with nuclear medicine, which is performed during the treatment of patients with hyperparathyroidism and recurrent thyroid tumors.
