G. Monasterio Foundation - Fondazione Toscana G. Monasterio, Pisa, Italy
The Fondazione CNR- Regione Toscana, G. Monasterio (FTGM), is a tertiary referral Italian Center, fully devoted to diagnosis and treatment of heart diseases. This Institution is made of two different structures, the first one located in Pisa and mainly involved in clinical research in the field of adult cardiology and the other located in Massa and dedicated to diagnosis and treatment (either by interventional cardiac catheterization or surgical approach) of congenital and acquired cardiac diseases. This latter is made of an Adult Cardiology Unit, Paediatric Cardiology and GUCH Unit, Adult Cardiac Surgery and Congenital (pediatric and adult) Cardiac Surgery, in which patients of all ages including neonates and infants can be treated.
Thus, several fellowship programs are currently available at our Institution according to the professional skills, including (You can opt for one of the below, but if you want to do rotations in all of these, then you will have to let us know); Theprimary focus of this fellowship remains PEDITRIC CARDIOLOGY
Department of Paediatric Cardiology/GUCH Unit and Congenital Cardiac Surgery
Since the late 70s, all types of surgical palliations/intervention for children and adults with rare congenital heart malformations have been performed at the Pediatric Cardiology and GUCH Department of FTGM. Over time, hybrid approaches have been routinely performed in order to minimize risks and hospital stay length. Since the late 80s, our cardiac catheterization laboratory significantly contributed to the development of percutaneous techniques in Italy and Europe and currently performs all the available procedures including the most innovative techniques (hybrid procedures, percutaneous valve implantation, para-valvar leak closure, left appendage exclusion, etc). In addition, our department offers several recognized expertise in the field of cardiac imaging including echocardiography, fetal echocardiography and cardiac CT scan and MRI. The echo lab is actively working together with some of the most prestigious European and North American Centers for the development of new imaging techniques (including 3D echocardiography, strain analysis, and lung ultrasound). A dedicated MRI service for CHD guided by pediatric cardiologists has significantly contributed to the development of this imaging modality within the field of pediatric cardiology since 90'. CT imaging is also available with CHD expert radiologists dedicated to the pediatric field.
Here are the numbers of procedures, in one year:
Research opportunities
One of the peculiarities of our institution is the outlook for research and innovation. Research is a specific mission of FTGM (formerly the Institute of Clinical Physiology). Since many years our Institution has established close cooperation with several Institutions among which the distinguished University Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna of Pisa (for teaching and research in the field of cardiology and cardiac surgery), and the Institute of Clinical Physiology CNR that has several research laboratories ranging from Lab medicine to genetic and bio-engineering working essentially in the field of cardiology, some of which internationally renowned.
Short fellowship duration: Short period visits (1-2 weeks) are allowed, despite we would encourage longer stay (at least 1 month) in order to have a comprehensive glance of our activities, to familiarize with our kind staff, and to create active clinical/research collaborations.
Location: FTGM is composed by two Institutions one in the historical university city of Pisa and one located in the hill of Massa, a small, quiet town just at 2 km from the beautiful Mediterranean beaches.
