The main research areas of our group are:

Cardiac channelopathies: in vitro characterization of the functional consequences of genetic mutation related to cardiac arrhythmias.
Neuronal channelopathies: in vitro characterization of the functional consequences of genetic mutation related to several forms of epilepsy.
Muscle channelopathies: in vitro characterization of the functional consequences of genetic mutation related to myotonia.
Personalized medicine strategies in human channelopathies

Techniques You Will Learn

Experimental platforms/techniques you will learn during your program here:

Platforms for in vitro studies

Cell cultures (primary or stable cell lines)
Differentiation of cardiomyocytes from human iPSCs
Cellular electrophysiology (patch—clamp, automated patch-clamp, MEA system)
Intracellular calcium dynamics
Sarcomeres contractility measurements

In vitro assays

Cell culture establishment and maintenance
Cell transfection, Electroporation
Cell viability/toxicity assays
Immunofluorescence
Immunoblotting

Curriculum

6-8 weeks curriculum

The trainee will be provided with the opportunity of learning the basis of preclinical research in the field of channelopathies, having experiences of facing with clinical staff (cardiologist, neurologists) and basic researchers in an interdisciplinary and translational research environment
The trainee will be provided with the unique opportunity of experiencing the laboratory practice and to operate trainings on cellular electrophysiology and cellular biology
The trainee may also have the opportunity of collaborating on research projects, depending on the ongoing activities at the time of the Trainee’s visit
The trainee will be provided with the opportunity of participating to meetings, journal clubs, seminars,including those of the PhD in DIMET, of the Virgilio Program and UNIMIB seminars besides the seminars at the IMTC in San Donato
The trainee will have the opportunity to join collaborative research programs with national and international laboratories and companies ongoing at the Labs at the time of the Trainee’s visit

This program allows Merit Applications. If you successfully are awarded a merit application - Trialect will take care of all bench and service fees, but you will have to take care of travel and accommodation. All applications will be scrutinized under the merit category. Considering 50 million health professionals around the world, the chances of getting selected under the merit category would be very low.
