Introduction

The placement is a practical appointment in a community setting focusing on public health field work-based
education, in Ratnapura Medical Officer of Health Area, Ratnapura District. The ‘Fellows’ will have an
opportunity to work at grass root level with public health field workers, community workers and the
community. If required the fellows will have access to the Provincial Teaching Hospital (1440 bed strength)
and exposure to medical basic sciences at the Medical Faculty, Ratnapura. The Placement will focus on
health care provided at community level to pregnant mothers, infants, children below 10 years, socially
marginalized people, workers in tea & rubber plantations and workers involved in Gem mining. They will also
get an opportunity to visit Singharaja rain forest and study the threats to the environment. The Fellows will
get an opportunity to study how effectively malaria, filaria, helminthiasis were controlled in Sri Lanka and
the programs introduced to control other communicable disease and non-communicable diseases.

The Fellows will get opportunities to conduct research or to get field experience in the following areas.

  • Skills in conducting antenatal and child welfare clinics and assist in NCD screening, lifestyle modification counselling in the community with limited resources and infrastructure
  • Work in primary care units and get exposed to different clinical conditions.
  • Assess nutrition level and study social & cultural factors affecting nutrition status in a country with limited income.
  • Understand strategies implemented to control communicable disease such as malaria, filaria,leprosy, rabies, dengue, STD and tuberculosis.
  • Understand living standards, health care status and facilities available of plantation (estate) workers and workers involved in gem mining.
  • Work with health care teams and the community with different ethnic and cultural values in healthcare promotion activities to reduce under nutrition, alcohol abuse, gender based violence etc.
  • Opportunities to share knowledge on environmental protection and forest conservation.
  • Work with hospital consultants or basic scientists in the Medical Faculty in an area of their interest
  • Opportunity to interacts with the community, community leaders, community-based organizations,government officials, health and non-health field workers and other stake holders in the area and share knowledge through seminars and workshops with local health care professionals and medical undergraduates

 

Logistics

Period: 4-12 weeks

  • Of the above listed learning outcomes student / fellow may need to decide on 5-6 learning outcomes and discuss with the Department of Community Medicine prior to the visit.
  • Fellows will be supported to settle down into their new environment (find appropriate accommodation and local amenities).
  • Desk space will be allocated in the Department of Community Medicine.
  • All field visits will be arranged according to the need of the fellow and a member of the university team will accompany the Fellow and will also help in translation.
  • Full induction (safety, personal welfare) will be provided by the University’s designated staff and by myself.
  • The fellows will be given the opportunity to actively participate in academic activities in the community and within the Medical School and the University, including attending workshops,
  • conferences etc.
  • At the end of every two weeks a meeting will be held with staff department to assess the progress of the learning outcomes.
  • Throughout the training, any challenges or specific requests of a fellow will be favorably considered to ensure adequate training to the satisfaction of the fellow.
  • At the end of the training the fellow is expected to write a report of the experience gained, and present it to the staff of the Department of Community Medicine and have a constructive
  • discussion.
  • If the Fellow is conducting data collection for a research study, prior ethical approval is required from Sri Lanka. However, study can be designed during their stay.

This program allows Merit Applications. This program allows merit-based applications for virtual and onsite clinical and research programs. If you are successfully awarded under this category, Trialect or the host mentor will cover the tuition fee only. All applications will be evaluated based on merit. Due to the high level of competition, the chances of being selected under the merit category are quite limited.
