Introduction

The placement is a practical appointment, based in a community setting focusing on public health field work- setting based education in Ratnapura Medical Officer Health Area, Ratnapura District. If required fellow will have access to the provincial hospital (1440 bed strength) and basic sciences at the medical faculty.Placement will focus on providing field work-setting based education on; Maternal and Child health care,Estate Health in tea & rubber plantations, Environmental and Occupational Health, Control of non-communicable and communicable diseases, by working with field pubic health care team.

Techniques You Will Learn

The opportunities to gain knowledge and skills during the attachment include,

Skills in conducting antenatal and child welfare clinics and assist in NCD screening, life style modification counselling in the community with limited resources and infrastructure
Knowledge on provision of food sanitation, occupational health and environmental health services in a tropical middle-income country
Understand strategies implemented to control communicable disease such as malaria, filaria, leprosy, rabies, dengu, STD and Tuberculosis
Knowledge on measures implemented for control of NCD
Understand living standards of plantation (estate) workers and health care facilities available
Work with health care teams and community with different ethnic and cultural values in health care promotion activities to reduce under nutrition, alcohol abuse, gender based violence etc.
Opportunities to share knowledge on environmental protection and forest conservation
Work with hospital consultants or basic scientists in an area of interest
Opportunity to interacts with community, community leaders, community-based organizations,government officials, health and non-health field workers and other stake holders in the area.
Understand and evaluate strategies implemented under Primary care provision
Share knowledge through seminars and workshop with local health care professionals and medical undergraduates

Logistics

Curriculum

Period- 4-12 weeks

Fellows will be supported to settle down into their new environment (find appropriate accommodation and local amenities). Desk space will be allocated. All field visits will be arranged to the need of the fellow and a member of the university team will accompany and will also help in translation Full induction (safety,personal welfare) will be provided by the University’s designated staff and by myself.The fellow will be given the opportunity to actively participate in academic activities in the community and within the Medical School and the University, including attending workshops, conferences etc.Throughout the training, any challenges or specific requests of a fellow will be favorably considered to ensure an adequate training to the satisfaction of the fellow.Students will require immunization against Covid 19 before travel, and support will be extended in obtaining visa to visit Sri Lanka.

Fees and Program Logistics

This program allows Merit Applications. If you successfully are awarded a merit application - Trialect will take care of all bench and service fees, but you will have to take care of travel and accommodation. All applications will be scrutinized under the merit category. Considering 50 million health professionals around the world, the chances of getting selected under the merit category would be very low.
