Lecturing and Teaching:
This unit is designed for public health professionals of all relevant professional backgrounds, who will generally have an MPH degree, or equivalent (although this is not mandatory), and who are interested to learn more about public health at European level, including epidemiology, policy and management, and public health professionalisation in Europe. In this context Europe will usually be defined as the whole of the European Union and other countries in the European Economic Area. I have developed Powerpoint (ppt) slides-based lecture notes, and additionally I shall be explaining and guiding students in 30 minute sessions on a weekly basis, via Skype. In addition, course-related questions, advice on how to apply for various categories of EU funding, including for research, and career advice questions will be answered either by e-mail or via Skype chat.
Curriculum of Study Information
In this unit students will be introduced to:
Determinants of health and how to influence them: the implications of globalisation and European integration for public health interventions;
WHO and the Health for All (HFA) information system;
EU public health policies and programmes, and Health in Structural Funds;
Influencing the determinants of health at EU level – lobbying for health in Europe;
The Common Agricultural Policy (CAP): Food Subsidies and Health;
Public health workforce development, professionalism and public health training in Europe.
Students will be expected to write an assignment (approximately 500 words, excluding references), on a subject to be set, relating to a topical issue in the context of the topics listed above.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this curriculum of study students will be able to:
Demonstrate in-depth understanding of variations in health status and in the prevalence of various risk factors and related health problems across Europe;
Demonstrate in-depth understanding of the EU institutions, their roles, and how EU legislation is formulated and enacted, especially in fields relevant to the health of European citizens;
Critically assess contemporary debates in health policy in Europe;
Demonstrate in-depth understanding of the benefits and disadvantages of different approaches to health improvement in Europe;
Develop critical and analytical skills of the benefits and disadvantages of different health care systems in Europe;
Analyse critically current EU public health policies and programmes and explore the roles and working practices of the public health professions;
Present a critical and coherent argument demonstrating in-depth understanding and synthesis of concepts and practice in health policy in Europe.
