Musculoskeletal Imaging, Neuroradiology, Radiotherapy, and Nuclear Medicine

Foggia University School of Medicine

Foggia University School of Medicine, Foggia, Italy

Main Areas of Interest

Dr. Giuseppe Guglielmi is a Professor of Radiology at the University of Foggia and the Scientific Institute Hospital in San Giovanni Rotondo, Italy. He is also a Professor of Radiology at the Catholic University "Our Lady of Good Counsel" in Tirana, Albania. His primary focus is on musculoskeletal radiology, with a particular emphasis on metabolic bone disease. Additionally, he serves as a research associate with the Osteoporosis and Arthritis Research Group in the Department of Radiology at the University of California, San Francisco.

In recent years, Dr. Guglielmi has made significant contributions in the field of forensic radiology and currently leads the Italian team in the European multicenter project on post-mortem Angio-CT. He is the Editor-in-Chief of the British Journal of Radiology/Case Reports and the Editor-in-Chief of the musculoskeletal section for EURORAD. He also serves on the editorial boards of several prestigious journals including La Radiologia Medica, Skeletal Radiology, European Radiology, European Journal of Radiology, British Journal of Radiology, Journal of Clinical Densitometry, Current Radiology Reports, Journal of Forensic Radiology and Imaging, and Singapore Medical Journal. Dr. Guglielmi is also a manuscript reviewer for numerous leading journals such as Radiology, RadioGraphics, European Radiology, Calcified Tissue International, Osteoporosis International, and more.

Main Research Areas of Our Group Include:

  • Diagnostic imaging of metabolic bone diseases
  • Body composition imaging
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Forensic radiology
  • Medical writing
  • Neuroradiology (DWI, perfusion, spectroscopy)
  • Breast imaging

Our university center houses several specialized units (breast unit, prostate unit, head and neck unit, stroke unit) where participants can engage in multidisciplinary medical groups to enhance their learning experience.

Regarding Medical Physics:

At our center, we conduct quality assurance for radiotherapy, radiology, and nuclear medicine. We offer treatment plans for radiotherapy including 3D, IMRT, ARRC therapy, stereotactic therapy, and patient dosimetry in radionuclide therapy.

Regarding Nuclear Medicine Activities:

In our center, we perform both nuclear medical diagnosis and therapy. Diagnostic services include:

  • Scintigraphy: cardiac perfusion using a dedicated gamma camera with CZT crystals, bone scans, thyroid scintigraphy, renal scintigraphy, perfusion cerebral SPECT, cerebral SPECT with DaTSCAN, scintigraphy with Octreoscan, lymphatic scintigraphy, and parathyroid scintigraphy.
  • PET/CT studies with radiopharmaceuticals such as 18F-FDG, 18F-Choline (prostate cancer), and 18F-Flutemetamol (cerebral amyloid plaques).
  • Metabolic radiotherapy for post-surgical differentiated thyroid tumors.

Our nuclear medicine department also performs sentinel node studies for breast cancer and melanoma.

Diagnostic Imaging, Radiation Therapy, and Specialized Techniques:

Our center offers a comprehensive range of advanced techniques in both radiation therapy and diagnostic imaging, integrating multidisciplinary expertise in musculoskeletal radiology, neuroradiology, and specialized imaging.

Diagnostic Imaging and Specialized Techniques: Our center is also a leader in the following areas of diagnostic imaging and research:

  • Diagnostic Imaging of Metabolic Bone Diseases: Advanced imaging modalities are utilized to assess conditions such as osteoporosis and other metabolic bone disorders, with a focus on bone density and structural integrity.
  • Body Composition Imaging: Techniques like DEXA scans and advanced MRI protocols are employed to evaluate body composition, particularly in relation to fat distribution, muscle mass, and bone health.
  • Osteoarthritis Imaging: Specialized imaging is used to diagnose and monitor osteoarthritis, including detailed assessments of cartilage, synovial tissue, and joint structure.
  • Forensic Radiology: Our center actively participates in forensic imaging, including post-mortem Angio-CT and related techniques that are instrumental in medico-legal investigations.
  • Neuroradiology (DWI, Perfusion, Spectroscopy): State-of-the-art diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI), perfusion studies, and MR spectroscopy are integral to our neuroradiology services, providing insights into neurological disorders, stroke management, and brain tumor characterization.
  • Breast Imaging: The breast unit offers comprehensive diagnostic services, including mammography, breast ultrasound, and MRI, focusing on early detection and precise characterization of breast lesions.

Radiation Therapy Unit: The Radiation Therapy Unit is equipped with two cutting-edge linear accelerators (LINAC-Varian) and a Canon simulation CT scanner. We focus on treating a wide variety of conditions, including breast, prostate, colorectal, gynecological, hematological, and head and neck neoplasms, along with brain and osseous metastases. The techniques employed include:

  • 3D conformal radiotherapy for precise tumor targeting
  • Sliding window intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) for focused radiation delivery
  • Arc therapy for rotational treatment approaches
  • Fractionated stereotactic radiotherapy (FSRT) for both brain and body treatments
  • Image-guided radiotherapy (IGRT) utilizing cone-beam CT (CBCT) for real-time imaging during treatment

For enhanced treatment precision, PET and MRI images are fused with simulation CT scans to provide accurate and comprehensive treatment planning.

Medical Writing and Research Involvement: Participants will also benefit from opportunities to engage in medical writing and research, honing skills in scientific communication while contributing to high-impact publications.

Our multidisciplinary units (breast unit, prostate unit, head and neck unit, stroke unit) are designed for collaborative learning, where participants can gain hands-on experience while working alongside experts in their fields.

6-12 Weeks Curriculum: This is a representative sample. This can be customized to meet the trainee needs.

Week 1: Orientation and Induction

  • Fellows will receive support to settle into their new environment, including assistance in finding suitable accommodation and locating amenities.
  • Registration at the University will be facilitated, during which an ID card will be issued.
  • A dedicated desk space will be allocated.
  • Comprehensive induction will be provided by the University’s designated staff and the program lead, covering:
    • Safety protocols
    • Laboratory practices
    • Personal welfare
  • An initial meeting will be arranged between the fellow and the program lead to discuss:
