Sahlgrenska University Hospital, Sweden
Location: Gothenburg, Sweden
The Transplantation Center at Sahlgrenska University Hospital is the largest and most renowned transplant center in Sweden and across Scandinavia. Conveniently located in the heart of Gothenburg, the hospital is easily accessible by bike and is adjacent to one of Europe's largest botanical gardens, Botaniska. Fellows can enjoy serene walks or savor a vegetarian lunch amidst the garden's beauty during their breaks.
Our Expertise: At our center, we specialize in a wide range of organ transplants, including kidney, liver, heart, lung, intestine, uterus, pancreas, islet cells, and multivisceral transplants. Annually, we perform around 200 kidney transplants, with 20% of these from living donors. We are proud to lead Scandinavia in ABO incompatible kidney transplants, performing approximately 20 such procedures each year.
Facilities and Patient Care: Our Transplantation Center features a dedicated ward with 12-18 beds for patients undergoing transplants. Post-surgery, patients are transferred to Ward 139, where our Renal team provides expert care, typically for 4-5 days in uncomplicated cases. We also accommodate patients from other renal departments across Sweden who require post-transplant care for complications such as rejection, infection, ureteral strictures, and transplantectomy.
Follow-Up Care: After discharge, patients are either monitored by our Renal team at the Outpatient Department for 1 week to 3 months or transferred to their home renal department, anywhere within our coverage area of approximately 3.8 million people. Our follow-up regimen includes bi-weekly outpatient visits during the first month, weekly visits during the second month, and bi-weekly visits during the third month post-transplant.
Our Team: Our Renal team consists of 5 Consultant Nephrologists, including 2 Ph.D. candidates involved in clinical research. Two consultants, including the Supervisor, hold Ph.D. titles and contribute to ongoing clinical research. Additionally, 1-2 Fellows in nephrology receive advanced training within our team.
Current Research Projects: Our team is actively engaged in several groundbreaking clinical research projects, including:
