The Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology comprises 57 inpatient beds, a gastrointestinal bleeding unit, 5 outpatient clinics, 6 endoscopy rooms and 2 liver ultrasound rooms among other facilities.
Candidates may be entitled to one of the following sections at their own discretion:
1) Section of Hepatology and Liver Transplantation.
The main clinical and research topics are liver cirrhosis, hepatocellular carcinoma and liver transplantation. In particular, our clinical and research group is involved in phase II randomized trials evaluating novel systemic drugs to treat advanced hepatocellular carcinoma, and is conducting several research projects to evaluate the role of liquid biopsy in this clinical setting. Regarding liver transplantation, our group is focused on immunosuppression strategies to improve long-term survival. The trainee would be able to participate in the following clinical activities: ward rounds of hepatology and liver transplantation, evaluation of liver transplant candidates, liver ultrasound including doppler in transplanted patients and non-invasive assessment of liver fibrosis (Fibroscan), and attendance to outpatients clinics dedicated to liver patients. In addition, the trainee would be encouraged to attend to early morning clinical sessions and to the weekly meeting of the multidisciplinary transplant team, which is composed by hepatologists, hepato-biliary surgeons, radiologists and intensivists, and is devoted to evaluate potential candidates for liver transplantation, as well as to make therapeutic decisions in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma.
2) Section of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD).
The IBD section focuses on the management of complex patients receiving biologic therapies. Our clinical and research group is involved in phase II-III randomized trials evaluating novel therapies for Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. Our research projects aim to identify proteomic markers for response to biologic therapies in IBD, and the validation of SNPs associate with Crohn’s disease. The trainee would be able to participate in the following clinical activities: ward rounds of gastroenterology, endoscopic evaluation of IBD patients with flares or remission, and attendance to outpatients clinics dedicated to IBD patients four days per week. In addition, periodical meetings of the IBD multidisciplinary team (gastroenterologists, surgeons, paediatricians, pharmacologist and immunologist) are celebrated in order to evaluate potential candidates to receive biologic therapies or to undergo surgery. We hope you will find our Unit of your interest and we look forward to meet you.
