Surgical Procedures and Techniques You Can Participate In and Learn During Your Program:
Introduction to the Department of Surgery, Transplantation, and Gastroenterology, formerly the Department of Transplantation and Surgery ("Baross Street" Clinic)
The clinic is internationally accredited as a European transplantation surgery training center by the Transplantation Section of the European Board of Surgery (UEMS-EBS) and Eurotransplant.
Our activities are focused on organ transplantation (kidney, liver, combined kidney-pancreas, and pancreatic islet cell transplantation) and related specialties. In 2014, according to Eurotransplant data comparing transplantation centers in eight European member countries, our clinic performed the highest number of kidney transplants, and we ranked fifth for liver transplants, placing our clinic at the forefront of abdominal organ transplantation.
Our clinic has highly trained colleagues available to care for patients. We cover all areas of general abdominal surgery, with a special focus on treating and managing cancer patients, as well as on the surgical treatment of diseases of the endocrine glands (adrenal, thyroid, parathyroid). Minimally invasive (laparoscopic) techniques are used for surgeries on several organs (gallbladder, adrenal glands, kidney, liver, pancreas, gastrointestinal system, etc.). We perform the highest number of living donor kidney transplants in the country, with laparoscopic methods used for donor kidney removal. We plan continuous profile expansion in this rapidly developing field. Our clinic is also committed to the surgical correction and treatment of complicated biliary diseases and liver tumors.
Our intensive care unit operates under the auspices of the Semmelweis University Department of Anesthesiology and Intensive Therapy and provides state-of-the-art care for patients requiring transplantation, general surgery, and intensive care.
Our qualified staff manage the care of patients after organ transplants, as well as the evaluation, treatment, and care of internal medicine kidney and liver patients, including the assessment of living donors.
We are part of the 250-year-old Semmelweis University, and we keep up with the
development of modern surgical approaches.
With existence of many subspecialties at one place we are able to perform all steps of patient
care from diagnostics, prehabilitation to postoperativ management.
At our Gastroenterology department besides diagnostics, therapeutic procedures are also done
involving biliary system and GI tract, and the department is a high volume center for IBD
patients, as well.
To extend our minimal invasive profile, years ago we started transanal surgeries, and in 2022
we introduced Da Vinci.
We treat more than 2000 oncological patients per year and perform about thousand minimal
invasive operations yearly.
In cooperation with the Gynecology department we are doing hyperthermic intraperitoneal
chemotherapy (HIPEC) surgery.
Taking transplantation into consideration, we carry out roughly 200 kidney and 80 liver
implantations and 150-200 multiorgan retrieval annually, therefore we are one of the busiest
centers of Eurotransplant community.
Our department is also a transplantation training center accredited by the Europen Union of
Medical Specialists (UEMS) Transplant Surgery Division.
In our 4 - 12 week training program we offer the opportunity to participate in routine surgical
procedures and in special operations, which are useful for beginners and professionals alike.
We nominate a senior leader who will guide the participants and they can keep in touch with
each other during the whole period. Questions can be discussed meantime.
