Center description: La Paz University Hospital is one of the biggest and most recognized centers in Spain. The Arrhythmia unit was established in 1994 and since them it has trained many fellows, mostly from Latin-America but also from Europe. The main interest of the unit is on EP, especially on re-entrant arrhythmias (such as atypical flutter and VT) and AF. The centre has pioneered the development of new EP mapping systems (Ensite, fluorofree ablations and device implantations) and remote navigation systems (Magnetecs and Amigo). Since the beginning the centre has been highly involved in activities for high quality EP education and professional recognition (EP certification in Spain and Europe, corecurriculum, hands-on courses, etc)
Visiting Fellowship Program in Electrophysiology : There are daily ablation procedures in 2 adult labs devoted to EP plus weekly ablation procedures in the pediatric lab. Device (PM, ICD & CRT) implantation and lead extraction in a nearby operating room. High use of 3D electroanatomical systems (mainly Ensite but also Carto and the Colombus system) and intracardiac echo. AF cryoballoon and PFA ablation, Epicardial VT ablation. Arrhythmia and Device Outpatient Clinic. EP educational program both at the cardiology department and the Arrhythmia unit with daily patient discussion and lectures. Active research program with participation in multicentre trials on ablation, antiarrhythmic drugs, anticoagulants and heart rhythm devices. Active involvement in most EHRA activities.
Weekly EP education sessions and daily educational activities.
Jose L. Merino, MD, PhD, FEHRA is director of the Arrhythmia and Robotic Electrophysiology Unit at La Paz University Hospital (Madrid), professor of Cardiology at the Autonoma University of Madrid and 2022-2024 President of EHRA. He is past President of the Working Group on Arrhythmia (Spanish Society of Cardiology), and past Chairperson of the Certification, Training Fellows and Education Committees of EHRA. He has been also member of the Scientific Committee of the last EHRA congresses (2007, 2009, 2011, 2018, 2019, 2023, 2024 & 2025). His main research interest is on atrial and ventricular arrhythmias, with more than 500 contributions as congress abstracts and more than 200 articles published in indexed journals. His main contributions in this field have been for ablation of complex arrhythmias and development of new antiarrhythmic and anticoagulant drugs, electroanatomical mapping (Ensite, Carto and Colombus) and remote navigation systems (CGCI-Magnetecs, Amigo-Catheter Robotics)
