Clinical Pharmacology, Clinical investigation Center, and Cardio-oncology Departments,Assistance Publique - Hôpitaux de Paris, Paris
The main research areas of our group are:
The thematic priorities of the CIC Paris-East are, cardiology and endocrinology-diabetes-metabolism-nutrition, and two transversal themes, physiology and early pharmacology studies, in particular early phase oncology trials. CIC Paris-Est also hosts a starting cardio-oncology program, in close collaboration with Vanderbilt University Medical Cente
Note: During rotation, both English (for research projects and lab meetings) and French (interaction with patients) would be spoken so having a level B French knowledge would help (if the aim is to be exposed to patients).
What you will learn during your program here:
The Paris-East Clinical Investigation Center (CIC Paris-Est) is a 440 m² structure equipped with outpatient and inpatients clinical facilities. The CIC is entirely dedicated to protocol set-up, organization and implementation including data acquisition, phenotyping, outpatient clinic visits and collection as well as short-term processing and storage of biological data. The CIC also trains additional clinical research assistants (CRAs) recruited for a given protocol and these CRAs are usually mobile within the hospital to collect data in clinical divisions which are all located in the vicinity of the CIC. The CIC currently functions as a week-care hospital but there is no permanent personnel to allow overnight monitoring of patients. To this end interim nurses need to be recruited for each study which requires night hospitalizations. The CIC includes 4 investigational beds allowing night hospitalizations plus 2 beds for day-time investigations. All 6 beds are fully equipped to conduct complex clinical studies, including phase I trials. Patients benefit from individual monitoring redirected to a central telemetry; all appropriate equipment to guarantee safety, including hand-free telephone communication with a nearby Intensive Care Unit, are available on site. It is a fully authorized facility to perform phase I to III trials as well as non-pharmacological studies in adult patients and healthy volunteers. In addition to these 6 investigations beds the CIC has 2 consultation rooms, a blood sampling room, a nurses room, a local pharmacy, a small laboratory for handling, processing and short-term storage of biological samples, medical and non-medical offices, a meeting room, a kitchen, a waiting room for volunteers, archives and storage rooms, a room for –80°C and –20°C freezers (with secured alarms and temperature recording devices). The thematic priorities of the CIC Paris-East are, cardiology and endocrinology-diabetes-metabolism-nutrition, and two transversal themes, physiology and early pharmacology studies, in particular early phase oncology trials. CIC Paris-Est also host a starting cardio-oncology program, in close collaboration with Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
4-12 weeks curriculum
Fellows will be supported to settle down into their new environment (find appropriate accommodation, locate amenities, etc.). A desk space will be allocated. Full induction (safety, laboratory practices, personal welfare, etc.) will be provided by the University’s designated staff and by myself. I will arrange an initial meeting with the fellow to discuss the objectives of the training.
The fellow will be fully trained to all activities of the Department. They will be able to engage with me (supervisor) and other members of the group in different procedures. They will also be engaged in clinical research and write a manuscript during their stay, with a purpose of publication in international peer-reviewed journals.
The fellow will be given opportunity to partake in group meetings and other academic activities within the School and the University, including attending workshops, conferences etc. They will also be encouraged to present their work orally at a group meeting at least once before they complete their visit.
Towards the end of the training I will have a meeting with the fellow to discuss plans to publish their work (if enough data collected) or disseminate their findings in a future conference. They will also be assisted to identify existing or future opportunities, globally or within their original work environment, that the training has empowered them to be eligible and competitive for and how they can be assisted to access them and also integrate the knowledge and skills gained into their further research or professional practice roles.
All throughout the training any peculiar challenges or specific requests of a fellow will be fully considered to ensure a responsive, relevant and adequate training plan is developed for them.
