Clinical Trials Fellowship - Cardio-Oncology

Sorbonne Université - INSERM - CIC, Clinical Pharmacology, Cardio-oncology, APHP, La Pitié-Salpêtrière, Paris, France
(5/5) - 10 reviews

Clinical Pharmacology, Clinical investigation Center, and Cardio-oncology Departments,Assistance Publique - Hôpitaux de Paris, Paris

Main Areas of Interest

The main research areas of our group are:

  • Clinical trials: conception and realization
  • Cardio-metabolism and nutrition
  • Early phase trials (oncology, cardiology, metabolism, endocrinology)
  • Pharmacovigilance

The thematic priorities of the CIC Paris-East are, cardiology and endocrinology-diabetes-metabolism-nutrition, and two transversal themes, physiology and early pharmacology studies, in particular early phase oncology trials. CIC Paris-Est also hosts a starting cardio-oncology program, in close collaboration with Vanderbilt University Medical Cente

Note: During rotation, both English (for research projects and lab meetings) and French (interaction with patients) would be spoken so having a level B French knowledge would help (if the aim is to be exposed to patients).

What you will learn during your program here:

  • Principles of clinical trials in the field of cardio-metabolism and endocrinology research (n=40/50 trials ongoing)
  • Principles of pharmacovigilance: data collection and use of the international pharmacovigilance database, VigiBase
  • Participation in a cardio-oncology program
  • Participation in a research with a purpose of publication

The Paris-East Clinical Investigation Center (CIC Paris-Est) is a 440 m² structure equipped with outpatient and inpatients clinical facilities. The CIC is entirely dedicated to protocol set-up, organization and implementation including data acquisition, phenotyping, outpatient clinic visits and collection as well as short-term processing and storage of biological data. The CIC also trains additional clinical research assistants (CRAs) recruited for a given protocol and these CRAs are usually mobile within the hospital to collect data in clinical divisions which are all located in the vicinity of the CIC. The CIC currently functions as a week-care hospital but there is no permanent personnel to allow overnight monitoring of patients. To this end interim nurses need to be recruited for each study which requires night hospitalizations. The CIC includes 4 investigational beds allowing night hospitalizations plus 2 beds for day-time investigations. All 6 beds are fully equipped to conduct complex clinical studies, including phase I trials. Patients benefit from individual monitoring redirected to a central telemetry; all appropriate equipment to guarantee safety, including hand-free telephone communication with a nearby Intensive Care Unit, are available on site. It is a fully authorized facility to perform phase I to III trials as well as non-pharmacological studies in adult patients and healthy volunteers. In addition to these 6 investigations beds the CIC has 2 consultation rooms, a blood sampling room, a nurses room, a local pharmacy, a small laboratory for handling, processing and short-term storage of biological samples, medical and non-medical offices, a meeting room, a kitchen, a waiting room for volunteers, archives and storage rooms, a room for –80°C and –20°C freezers (with secured alarms and temperature recording devices). The thematic priorities of the CIC Paris-East are, cardiology and endocrinology-diabetes-metabolism-nutrition, and two transversal themes, physiology and early pharmacology studies, in particular early phase oncology trials. CIC Paris-Est also host a starting cardio-oncology program, in close collaboration with Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

4-12 weeks curriculum

Fellows will be supported to settle down into their new environment (find appropriate accommodation, locate amenities, etc.). A desk space will be allocated. Full induction (safety, laboratory practices, personal welfare, etc.) will be provided by the University’s designated staff and by myself. I will arrange an initial meeting with the fellow to discuss the objectives of the training.

The fellow will be fully trained to all activities of the Department. They will be able to engage with me (supervisor) and other members of the group in different procedures. They will also be engaged in clinical research and write a manuscript during their stay, with a purpose of publication in international peer-reviewed journals.

The fellow will be given opportunity to partake in group meetings and other academic activities within the School and the University, including attending workshops, conferences etc. They will also be encouraged to present their work orally at a group meeting at least once before they complete their visit.

Towards the end of the training I will have a meeting with the fellow to discuss plans to publish their work (if enough data collected) or disseminate their findings in a future conference. They will also be assisted to identify existing or future opportunities, globally or within their original work environment, that the training has empowered them to be eligible and competitive for and how they can be assisted to access them and also integrate the knowledge and skills gained into their further research or professional practice roles.

All throughout the training any peculiar challenges or specific requests of a fellow will be fully considered to ensure a responsive, relevant and adequate training plan is developed for them.

found this experience to be incredibly enriching and pivotal for my professional development in the field of cardio-oncology.The hands-on experience in clinical trials was particularly beneficial. Working closely with experienced mentors, I gained valuable insights into the design, implementation, and analysis of cardio-oncology clinical trials. This practical experience has significantly enhanced my understanding of the challenges and nuances in this field. Moreover, the opportunity to collaborate with peers from diverse backgrounds created an environment of shared learning and professional growth. The interactive sessions, case studies, and group discussions fostered a deeper understanding of the subject matter and stimulated innovative thinking. N/A

I am glad to have got the opportunity to participate in this program. It was very interesting even for me who specialize in obs& gyne. The host mentor has exceptional knowledge and experience in the field and was very cooperative. All the team members were extremely friendly. Moreover, I had a chance to collaborate to a research study and still keep in touch for current ongoing and future projects. I recommend this fellowship to anyone who wants to expand their knowledge in this area and join a research team. Moreover, it a great opportunity to immerse in French culture, practice your language, and visit a lot of interesting places in the afternoon.

Having the opportunity to collaborate in this program was of great support and educational growth. The work supervised by the host mentor Dr. Salem, and his work team created a warm, friendly, respectful and extremely professional environment. I had the opportunity to participate in a research study in which I acquired knowledge and skills, especially statistics, that will boost my academic career. An extraordinary fellowship for anyone looking to put into practice and improve their research knowledge. I am delighted to have had this opportunity. #N/A

All the team members were extremely cooperative and supportive and I had fruitful interactions with them. I had the opportunity to be part of a significant research study and also get an overview of pharmacovigilance as the host mentor kindly arranged my visit to the Pharmacovigilance department. Overall, it has been a truly enriching experience and I am keen to be involved in any future projects. I highly recommend the fellowship to anybody who intends to expand their knowledge, gain valuable experience in the field and work with a skilled research team. Communication by stakeholders in a different language limits the exchange of ideas and information. Hence while assigning the fellowship, adequate care and exchange of information should be done beforehand with regard to the language of communication. Also, each fellow has distinct strengths, experience, and expertise. The mentor should design the fellowship based on the CV of the fellow as well as share a well-defined program if possible date specific as to what the fellow is going to learn/ do in the stipulated period. Activities that can be done in the home country without any guidance should not be assigned. The mentor needs to be well aware of the same, then only the level of exchange of expertise stands worthwhile The fellowship in another country is always a learning experience since it exposes you to a new geographical region and its followed systems, processes and culture.

Found the Host Mentor to be extremely helpful in overall research guidance. Have plans (in progress) to write up article/s to be published in scientific journals. I will definitely keep in touch with him for future research endeavors. The possibility of lower tuition costs (at least for students from low to middle-income countries) needs to be considered. Other than that, I have no areas for improvement to remark. I am okay for other applicants to contact me for any advice.
