In order to improve application-oriented and patient-oriented medical research, it is necessary for physicians to combine clinical work and research in their professional activities (clinician scientists).
Although there are now programs in many places that offer young physicians such training during their specialist training, the attractiveness of a career as a clinician scientist remains limited because there are no suitable follow-up positions after the clinician scientist programs have ended.
As a solution, the Else Kröner-Fresenius Foundation writes three annual
Else Kröner Clinician Scientist Professorships
The professorships are intended to provide physicians with outstanding achievements in both patient care and research with a long-term perspective to pursue the career path of clinician scientists and to devote half of their working time to research, teaching, and patient care.
Funding for the professorship is planned for a maximum of 10 years. After an initial funding period of five years and subject to a positive interim evaluation, a one-time extension for a further five years is possible.
The Clinician Scientist Professorship is endowed with a total of up to €1.1 million. The funds are intended to cover the personnel costs of the research portion of the position holder, which should amount to 50% of the salary of a W3 professorship. The remaining funds are to be distributed over the term of the professorship and can be used freely by the position holder for research purposes.
Funding ends prematurely upon appointment to a tenured professorship. In this case, the use of unused funding, usually up to €300,000, can be requested with detailed justification.
Only one application is possible per faculty.
Doctors from university hospitals or other research institutions with patient care in Germany can apply,
Starting in 2026, the age limit for this funding line will be lowered. Applications will then only be accepted up to the age of 38.
Applications are open to doctors from university hospitals or other research universities with patient care in Germany and who do not yet hold a permanent professorship.
