Advanced Clinical Research Fellowship (Alzheimer’s disease UK)

Alzheimer’s Research UK

Our Clinical Fellowships are designed for clinically qualified applicants (such as trainee Old Age/General Psychiatrists, Neurologists, Clinical Psychologists or similar specialists) wishing to develop or further a career that combines dementia research and professional practice.

We have two types of Clinical Research Fellowships:

  • Doctoral Clinical Fellowships (previously called Clinical Research Training Fellowships).

These are for clinicians with limited research experience and who do not hold a PhD. The aim of this award is to help clinicians study towards a higher research degree (typically a PhD but can be an independent research programme) to provide them with the research track record, experience, and skills necessary to compete for advanced Fellowships, either through Alzheimer’s Research UK or elsewhere.

  • Advanced Clinical Fellowships (previously called Clinical Research Fellowships).

These are for clinicians who already hold a PhD and/or have delivered previous dementia research projects with evidence of impactful outputs and have clear plans to establish their own research programme.

These awards are for clinical and translational research projects that align with the Alzheimer’s Research UK’s strategy, focusing on treatment, diagnosis, and prevention of dementia.

  • These schemes can be for either clinical or translational research projects.
  • Research projects must align with the Alzheimer’s Research UK’s strategy, which focuses on treatment, diagnosis, and prevention of dementia.
  • The Fellow must be clinically qualified (such as UK MRCP, MRCPsych, BPS accreditation, or equivalent) with an honorary clinical contract.
  • Doctoral Clinical Fellowships and Advanced Clinical Fellowships must be applied for by the proposed Fellow, not the Supervisor.
  • Fellows are required to have secured a Supervisor(s), a senior established investigator(s) in the institution where the Fellowship is to be held. The Supervisor(s) will provide the facilities required for the research programme, will have oversight of the Fellow and their research programme, and will contribute actively to the further training of the Fellow. However, some Advanced Clinical Fellows may not require a formal Supervisor(s), in which case a Mentor(s) to support the Fellow with their project and clinical-academic career is required.
  • The Lead Supervisor/Mentor is expected to provide supervision/support for the entire duration of the fellowship and must have a fixed-term or tenured contract with the Host Institution that covers the proposed fellowship period. If the Lead Supervisor/Mentor does not hold a contract for the duration of the fellowship, the application must include a co-supervisor/co-mentor who does.
  • The prospective Fellow and Lead Supervisor/Mentor must be based in a UK academic/research institution. However, the application can include collaborators from outside the UK.
  • Support from the Host Institution is required for all Clinical Fellowships. The Head of Department must provide a letter of support.
  • Doctoral applicants can request up to 20% full-time equivalent (one day each week) towards continuous clinical practice. Additional justified practice time up to 40% can be requested by Advanced clinical applicants.
  • Advanced Clinical applicants requiring larger than £500,000 grant amount can propose joint funding between Alzheimer’s Research UK and their Host NHS Organisation. Such funding support from the Host NHS Organisation must be demonstrated in the Host Institution letter of support and the Finance and costs section in the application form.
  • Note that a Doctoral Clinical Fellowship can be used to fund a full PhD programme. However, Alzheimer's Research UK can only cover the tuition fees costs associated with Home candidates. International candidates are welcome, but funds to cover the extra cost of international tuition fees must be sought from elsewhere. The scheme is not designed to cover funding gaps for students who have already started their studies.
  • If the project requires Ethics approval (clinical work) and/or Home Office licences (animal work), the award is dependent upon the requisite approvals being granted.
  • The Lead Applicant and all other grant participants are required read and understand all relevant ARUK research policies, including our Bullying and Harassment Policy.

See Home Office for any Visa information if needed.
