Clinical Research/ Epidemiology in Sepsis/Pneumonia and Critical Care Medicine
Our hospital is a tertiary 1300-bed teaching hospital, which serves as a reference center for a wide area in Catalonia, Spain. The hospital has a highly specialized microbiology department, an outstanding ID department and a world-leading critical care department, with neurosurgical, oncohematologic and solid organ transplant (lung, liver, head, etc) programs and burns, between other critically ill patients. CRIPS is a world-leading research group, with a particular interest in Sepsis, Pneumonia and Severe infections in critically ill patients. Many of them are
oncohematologic and transplant patients. Multidisciplinary rounds are conducted daily by fully-certified critical care specialists with ID physicians, hematologists, surgeons, and respiratory consultants. Excellent opportunities of interaction with both Microbiology & ID Departments. CRIPS is acknowledged by world-class research in nosocomial infections, community-acquired pneumonia and severe influenza infection, coordinated from the ICU. Clinical care is organized by three Teams (Immucompromised, Neurocritical and Medical-Surgical Teams) under the leadership of Dr. Rello.
Phase 2 and 3 RCT
Moreover, CRIPS has a research laboratory of a€ceSevere Respiratory Infection and Sepsisa€, located in the installations of the Research Institute of Hospital Vail d3€™Hebron (Collcerola Building). The group works in topics like: Acute Respiratory Failure and Mechanical Ventilation, developing an animal model focused on the effects of pharmacological treatments or the treatment with modified mesenchymal stem cells in LPS-induced lung injury in mice, Epidemiology and Infection Control in the ICU-Safety, Respiratory Infections in Immunocompromised ICU patients or Lung Transplant in ICU.

About Jordi Rello
Prof. Jordi Rello is Chief of the Critical Care Department at the Vall d'Hebron University Hospital in Barcelona, Spain, and Director of the Clinical Research & Innovation in Pneumonia and Sepsis (CRIPS) Group at Vall d'Hebron Research Institute. http://www.vhir.org/gr/crips
Professor of Medicine at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. He earned his Doctor of Medicine with Honors and his Ph.D. on Infectious Diseases at the University of Barcelona, Spain, followed by a residency and fellowship in Pulmonary and Critical Care at the Hospital de Sant Pau in Barcelona, Spain. He directed 13 doctoral theses.
His areas of research include studies on prevention and control of hospital-acquired infections, epidemiology of ventilator-associated pneumonia or severe community-acquired pneumonia, and treatment of infections in critically ill patients. He was active in developing many educational strategies, such as the APEX project or the Academy of Infection Management. We have large experience in Ad Boards for drug development and organizing educational preceptorship programs. An International Course on Antimicrobial and Sepsis (ICASIS) is organized each April, in Barcelona.
Prof. Rello has an H index of 74 (62 from 2008). Indeed, in February 2013, his score was number 4 in the world ranking of most referenced authors in critical care.
As a mentor, I will be available to incorporate researchers to our research network, happy to be of help to develop research projects or doctoral thesis on respiratory infections and sepsis. I will be delighted to provide training in critical care skills or facilitate training on the postoperative care of lung transplant patients. I would like to transmit my experience regarding how to write scientific communications and communicate research. I am willing to provide insight in clinical research and in the management of infections in the critically ill patients.
Research interests of the department:
We encourage to visit us fellows that want to develop skills in Evidence-based medicine in Sepsis, Pneumonia and Solid Organ Transplant. We try to involve them is doing a Systematic Review and Meta-analysis of an ongoing research project on these issues. The fellow will improve skills in scientific communication and critical reading.
