Department of imaging, University hospital of Poitiers, Poitiers, FRANCE
Pr. Jean Pierre Tasu, MD, PhD, Head of the department of diagnostic and interventional imaging
The Radiology Department in Poitiers University Hospital provides a comprehensive adult and pediatric inpatient and outpatient diagnostic imaging service to local and regional patients. This includes imaging modalities such as General Radiology, Ultrasound, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Computed Tomography (CT). The Department also includes a therapeutic Interventional Radiology Service. All procedures in interventional radiology could be performed from peripheral to neuro radiology. In addition to this, the department supports services to the Emergency Department and the cardiovascular department with a specific service dedicated to these activities.
The Department is provided by a multidisciplinary team of Radiologists, Radiographers, and Physicist. This team works collectively to provide quality patient healthcare with more than 200,000 examinations carried out each year.
As part of the educational opportunities that make a teaching Hospital, the department has close to the medical school of Poitiers with 2 full professors and 3 assistant professors. We also have medical exchanges with the Princess Grace de Monaco Hospital (Monaco, Principauté de Monaco) and the University Hospital of Geneva (HUG, Geneva, Switzerland).
The department has a strong research tradition and is currently involved in many clinical trials and research projects mainly focused on emergency radiology, abdominal imaging, and interventional radiology. We participate in many national and international research programs in oncology.
The department includes a French labeled research unit, DACTIM, which works on signal analysis in imaging with a specific focus in MR in vivo spectroscopy. Another team works on evaluation of tumor response from functional imaging (PET-CT mainly).
We do not carry out radiofrequency ablation for varicose veins, hemorrhoid embolisation and peripheral arterial stenting.
" new system during 2019 associating a double C-arm angiography coupled with a 256 MDCT (the first in France). It would be interesting for you to be on site after its set up. Before (I do not know the date yet),"
"This year, we have installed a 7T magnet dedicated to neuro-imaging and musculo-skeletal researches. In November, we will open a new interventional device combining CT and 2 C-arms system, the second in Europe"
Just a point about the current COVID 19 pandemic; Poitiers and its region (called Poitou Charentes) are relatively spared the disease and we have much fewer cases than in other regions in France. Applicants should not be scared on this point. The only restriction is to wear a mask. "
we perform around 150 treatments for cerebral aneurysms each year, 150 thrombectomies, more than one hundred chemoembolizations, and 30-40 biliary stentings. I don’t know how many cerebral and carotid DSA are performed each year, but we do that commonly.
We do not carry out radiofrequency ablation for varicose veins and peripheral arterial stenting.
The hospital is near the city center; there are public transport (bus) but having a car would be better. There are houses or flats to rent in and outside the city; the price is relatively low if I compare it with Paris. You can go to the following website (in French) for some examples; https://www.leboncoin.fr/. Select city, number of rooms, and type of properties… Another option is Airbnb (www.airbnb.fr) which offers some short time rentals. From Poitiers, you could visit some very interesting sites in France; at one hour by car, “les chateaux de la Loire”, “le marais Poitevin”, Bordeaux and the vineyards, at 1h15 by train, Paris, at 1h30, Disneyland Paris…Some points I would like to underline; take care of your health insurance which will be not given by my Hospital. Lastly, I think some French notions will be helpful even if my team speaks English. Meetings, conferences, lectures, treatments, and procedures are all in French.
"The department of radiology performs diagnosis and interventional radiology. We have 4 CT scans (2 64 rows, one 126, and one IQon for spectral imaging). We have 4 MRI magnets, two 3T, one 1.5T, and one 7T, this last one more focused on research. For interventional radiology, there are 2 operative rooms with double flap panels and cone beam CT, one with an additional 64-row CT scan. A sector is dedicated for women's imaging.
Because you don't have a European Diploma, you will not allow taking in charge of a patient. This is the rule for the whole of Europe. However, you will attend all procedures and medical staff according to your planning. And your planning is obviously up to you...
Poitiers is a small town where the cost of living is relatively low. You can find some accommodations on Airbnb. Please take care of the public transport; buses are not very frequent... Do not stay too far from the hospital. Downtown or near the hospital will be fine. The area around Poitiers is nice, and there are many things to do... The Atlantic Ocean is at 1h15, and Paris at 1h20 by train. I look forward to hearing from you soon."
"If your interest is in CT, we have 4 in the department, one IQon (the spectral CT from Philips), one 128 rows from Canon mainly focus on cardiac imaging, 2 64 rows (Siemens) one more dedicated to oncology, and one for emergencies. "
Radiology Programs: During the 2-4 weeks hosting visit, the Trialect fellows will have an opportunity to get a comprehensive insight into our daily diagnostic procedures and workflows. A dedicated mentor will navigate you through traineeship program. Depending on their personal interest and experience the fellows can gain particular experience in:
You can apply for more than one program:
"Thanks a lot for your interest in my department. Concerning your expectations, we perform each year around 150 treatments for cerebral aneurysm, 150 thrombectomies, more than one hundred chemoembolizations and 30-40 biliary stentings. I don’t know how many cerebral and carotid DSA are performed each year but we do that commonly. We also perform tumoral ablation (kidney, lung, liver), radio embolization of the liver, intra arterial chemotherapy, embolization of hemorrhages, biopsies under imaging guidance, venous stenting…. Pleasae note that we do not carry out radiofrequency ablation for varicose veins, and peripheral arterial stenting."
Meetings, conferences and lectures, treatments and procedures are all in French- Please at least learn level b French for your training to be very effective
A 7T magnet for advanced neuroradiology.
In the department, we have 2 interventional operative rooms, one more dedicated to neuro interventional procedure and one for general practices. A double C-arm fluoroscopy was set up in each. One have in addition a Cone Beam CT and the other a CT scan. For breast imaging, a dedicated area managed all patients, including IR. All procedures are commonly carried out by a team of more than 10 interventional radiologists. For MSK, we practice different procedures such as vertebroplasty, biopsie, ablation.
I would like to underline that according to the French law regulations, only doctors form Europe are allowed to perform procedures on patients in France. Consequently, you will be an observer without any option to take in charge directly a procedure and a patient. A minimal level in French would be a plus but the team speaks English. All medical meetings are in French.
