Studio Oculistico d'Azeglio is a private surgical center in Bologna, Italy. The founders, Giacomo Savini, MD, and Piero Barboni, MD, are supported by a large group of ophthalmologists and technicians. The main focus is patient care, but clinical research is another important field of interest. Both Dr. Savini and Barboni have published more than 200 papers on peer reviewed journals and their activity is not-stopping.
The main clinical and research areas of our group are:

4-12 weeks curriculum
Fellows will be supported to settle down into their new environment (find appropriate accommodation and locate amenities). Desk space will be allocated. Full induction (safety, clinical practices, personal welfare) will be provided by the clinical staff and by myself. I will arrange an initial meeting with the fellow to discuss the objectives of the training.
The fellow will be fully trained to all activities of the Department. They will be able to engage with me (supervisor) and other members of the group in different surgical procedures. They will also be engaged in clinical research and write a manuscript during their stay depending on their interest.
The fellow will be given the opportunity to actively participate in group meetings and other academic activities within the practice, including attending workshops, conferences, etc. They will also be encouraged to present their work orally at a group meeting at least once before they complete their visit.
Towards the end of the training, I will have a meeting with the fellow to discuss plans to publish their clinical work (if enough data collected) or disseminate their findings at a future conference.
Throughout the training, any particular challenges or specific requests of a fellow will be fully considered to ensure a responsive, relevant and adequate training plan is developed for them.
By a previous fellow: I completed my two fellowships in Glaucoma & Neuro-ophthalmology at Studio Oculistico d’Azeglio, Bologna, Italy, from January to March 2020. These were ‘hands-on’ certified fellowships by Trialect Inc. USA. Due to the devastating impact of the SARS-CoV2 epidemic in Italy & a countrywide lockdown of the hospitals, due to a large number of health care providers being infected, the period of my fellowships was cut short & I was advised to rush home immediately, concerning my safety. During my fellowships, I was able to examine all the glaucoma patients in the glaucoma clinic with Dr. Gian Luca Laffi, who is one of the few doctors in Italy with great expertise in this field. I was able to assist surgeries as well & perform them on artificial eyes. The new aspects of glaucoma that I learned during my stay there are: Bleb needling & anti-metabolite injections, Selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT), Diode laser cycloablation, Trabeculectomy with anti-metabolites, MIGS o Preserflo® microshunt o XEN45® o Revision of XEN45 o MIGS with Phacoemulsification • Molteno & other glaucoma valve implantation o Revision of bleb o Needling o Ahmed valve tube extender • Intra-operative gonioscopy • Ocular Doppler • OCT in diagnosis & management of glaucoma o Ganglion cell analysis o AS-OCT The Neuro-ophthalmology clinic that I attended with Dr. Piero Barboni & Dr. Michele Carbonelli included a vast variety of optic nerve disorders, amongst others. I was able to attend Bellaria Hospital of Neurology, where I could examine various neurological diseases affecting the eye, which were referred to the Neuroophthalmology clinic. Both doctors have expertise in this field & rely greatly upon genetic testing of the various optic nerve disorders and have experience as well in gene therapy for these. The aspects that I learnt were: • Complete neuro-ophthalmologic exam • LHON • Dominant optic neuropathies • Recessive optic neuropathies • Mitochondrial disorders related to eye • Disc drusen • Papilledema • Neurological diseases like MS, NMO, DIDMOAD, Friedrich’s ataxia etc to name a few • Perimetry of neurological diseases including 10-2, 24-2 & 30-2 • OCT features of optic nerve disorders & diagnosis & observation over time • OCTA I was able to attend two conferences for free: ‘Advanced Biometry Course: 7th Edition’ on 17th Jan, 2020 in Bologna, Italy & ‘Neuro-ophthalmology For Everyone: Lights Colors Vision’, on 24th Jan, 2020 in Bologna, Italy. In addition, I was able to learn newer aspects of cataract surgery, because the majority of surgeries at Studio Oculistico d’Azeglio are cataract surgeries, like: • Multifocal IOLs • Toric IOLs • Piggyback IOLs • Implantable IOLs/ ICLs I was also able to attend the weekly case presentation sessions at the Studio, and I was able to present my own cases as well. Dr. Giacomo Savini, Dr. Piero Barboni, Dr. Gian Luca Laffi and Dr. Michele Carbonelli were very nice, hospitable and friendly and were keen on helping me with everything. I am thoroughly obliged. It was a good learning experience. I am glad I was able to learn every day & made the most of my time there, before sadly the COVID-19 epidemic caused my centres of learning to close up till now. I was glad to return home before getting stuck there for a long, long period. I sincerely hope to apply my newly acquired knowledge on my patients & my students as well.
