From 1992 to 2004 he worked at the Department of Ophthalmology at the University Medical Center Utrecht, the Netherlands. Currently he is associate professor at the University Eye Clinic Maastricht, the Netherlands. The University Eye Clinic Maastricht is leading in eye care in the Netherlands, and home to 'the Maastricht Study', an extensive study to diabetes, with eye scans, blood samples, life style data and MRI scans available of 10.000 patients.
The main research areas of our group are: Scientific research focuses on glaucoma, corneal and cataract surgery and vitreoretinal diseases.
Maastricht University Eye Clinic has highly motivated staff that on average publishes 60 papers in peer-reviewed scientific journals and 3 PhD theses per year.
Tos TJM Berendschot’s overall research theme is to study the functional morphology of the human retina by non-invasive optical techniques. It also involves (spectroscopic) imaging of the human retina, analysis of clinical data and development of physiological models. Recent work involves the development of new non-invasive measurements techniques for both fundamental and clinical research in ophthalmology, and epidemiological studies on the relation between nutrition, macular pigment and age-related eye diseases. In particular field of interest is the development of retinal image analysis in collaboration with the Eindhoven University of Technology using innovative, newly developed and robust brain-inspired mathematical algorithms and deep learning.
To guarantee the quality of the research, Maastricht University Eye Clinic is a member of the European Vision Institute Clinical Research Network, a network of European Ophthalmological Clinical Research Sites, dedicated to perform clinical research in ophthalmology with the highest standards of quality, based on international guidelines for clinical research. 6-12 weeks curriculum
Fellows will be supported to settle down into their new environment (find appropriate accommodation, locate amenities, etc.) and register at the University, during which an ID card will be issued. A desk space will be allocated. Full induction (safety, laboratory practices, personal welfare, etc.) will be provided by the University’s designated staff and by myself. I will arrange an initial meeting with the fellow to discuss the objectives of the training and the expected mechanisms of their fulfilment. Experimental plans with realistic timelines will then be decided.
The fellow will be given opportunity to partake in research group meetings and other academic activities within the University Eye Clinic and the University. They will also be encouraged to present their work orally at a research group meeting at least once before they complete their visit.
Towards the end of the training I will have a meeting with the fellow to discuss plans to publish their work (if enough data collected) or disseminate their findings in a future conference. They will also be assisted to identify existing or future opportunities, globally or within their original work environment, that the training has empowered them to be eligible and competitive for and how they can be assisted to access them and also integrate the knowledge and skills gained into their further research or professional practice roles.
All throughout the training any peculiar challenges or specific requests of a fellow will be fully considered to ensure a responsive, relevant and adequate training plan is developed for them.
