Main Areas of Interest

Cerebral Amyloid Angiopathy (CAA) and Alzheimer Disease (AD) Translational Research

Workplace: Laboratory of CAA and AD Translational Research and Biomarkers, School of Medicine,University of Milano-Bicocca, Monza, Milano, Italy.

The main research areas of our group are:

Cerebral Amyloid Angiopathy (CAA) and CAA-related inflammation (CAA-ri)

  • Wet biomarkers discovery & validation of neuroinflammation, endothelial damage, anti-amyloid auto-antibodies (cerebrospinal fluid and plasma)
  • Imaging biomarkers (MRI) of WMHs, cerebral haemorrhage (cMBS, cSS), brain swelling

Spontaneous Amyloid-related Imaging Abnormalities (ARIA) and iatrogenic-ARIA side effects of immunotherapy with monoclonal antibodies drug targeting amyloid-deposited protein of
Alzheimer’s disease (AD)

  • Anti-amyloid dosage for diagnostic, prognostic, theranostic monitoring and drug target engagement and effectiveness
  • MRI hallmarks of ARIA-E and ARIA-H, MRI markers of CAA-ri and spontaneous CAA.

Experimental techniques/Technical approaches you will learn during your program here:

  • Educational classes and seminars on CAA-ri and ARIA, including disease mechanisms, risk factors, diagnosis, treatment
  • Deep learning activities for data interpretation in diagnosis recognition, prognosis and clinical-therapeutic monitoring at follow-up (CSF, MRI, clinical, therapy)
  • Cross sectional and longitudinal analyses of large International and national datasets/samples of the iCAB International Cohort Registry & Biobank
  • (https://sites.google.com/site/icabinternationalnetwork)
  • In-person stage in the CAA and AD Biomarkers Laboratory, including the set-up of the anti-Abeta autoantibody test.
  • In-person practice activities for the recognition and diagnosis of MRI images of ARIA and CAA-ri with real-life cases referred to the iCAB Network.
  • Team working activities with Laboratory Researchers, Neurologists and Neuroradiologist

6-12 weeks curriculum

  • The trainee will be provided with the opportunity of deeply understand the theoretical and practical activities needed for the diagnosis, disease monitoring and treatment of rare but increasingly emerging neurological conditions, namely CAA, CAA-ri, and ARIA side effects of immunotherapy of AD
  • The trainee will be provided with the unique opportunity to experience the Laboratory practice and to operate trainings on the innovative methods for CSF autoantibody test for CAA-ri and ARIA
  • The trainee will operate in an interdisciplinary and translational research environment, including meetings and in-person activities with basic scientists, neurologists, and neuroradiologist experts
  • The trainee will be provided with the unique Networking opportunities in the field of CAA-ri and ARIA
  • The trainee will also be provided with teaching classes and seminars provided by the School of Medicine, including the Neuroscience PhD program activities, and by the iCAB International
