Purpose
The Society of Toxicologic Pathology (STP) is pleased to announce the Annual STP Resident and Student Poster Award to encourage residents and veterinary students to pursue careers in the field of Toxicologic Pathology. The awardee will be selected on the basis of the quality of an abstract and poster presented at the 2023 ACVP Annual Meeting.
The award recipient will receive free registration plus $1,000 to be used for lodging and travel to the 2024 STP Annual Meeting. The recipient should plan on presenting the poster at this meeting; an oral presentation may also be requested in some circumstances.
Judging
Judges will select the top finalist veterinary student and finalist graduate student/resident abstracts prior to the meeting and contact the submitters prior to the meeting to ensure students are at their posters to discuss their submission with the judges.
For Trainee awards (e.g., Pathology of Wildlife & Zoo Animals, Young Investigator, travel awards for EB), you must be a veterinary student, pathology resident, or within 6 months of training completion, with the abstract representing work done during residency
For student externship scholarships, membership in an ACVP Student Chapter and selection by your institution are required .
Your abstract is primary: it must be well written, concise, and submitted on time per category deadlines (e.g., May 1 – July 1 for general; June 16 – Aug 4 for students; July 28 – Aug 11 for late-breaking).
Research quality is critically evaluated—criteria include scientific merit, relevance to veterinary pathology (diagnostics, experimental disease, toxicologic or clinical pathology), and clarity in oral/poster format
Select the award that aligns with your work and category, such as wildlife vs. clinical pathology and student vs. resident categories (e.g., Young Investigator Award specifically for residents/grad students) .
Only one abstract submission, with up to two award selections, is permitted—but reviewers may reassign it to a more fitting category .
Awards typically require in-person presentation at the Annual Meeting, travel to Experimental Biology (if applicable), and submission of receipts or personal statements for travel grants.
Preparing a personal statement describing commitment to the field and development goals can lift your application for travel support .
Many trainee awards require a letter from an ACVP Diplomate mentor or training program director, outlining your potential and the significance of your work .
Institutional endorsements (e.g., chapter/residency backing) are essential, especially for externship scholarships .
Award cycles adhere strictly to deadlines:
Student externship: March 1, October 1
Mentor of the Year, Scholarships: June 1 – September 1/2
Abstracts: multiple windows per category .
Late or incomplete submissions (abstracts, letters, receipts) are typically ineligible.

✅ Pro Tips
Start early on your abstract to meet formatting and thematic criteria.
Engage a mentor or program director for a compelling recommendation.
Apply to awards aligned with your work—select appropriate categories when submitting.
Plan travel logistics—ensure funding and check conference registration.
Use student/external scholarship programs to fund participation in residency-expo or externship opportunities.
Share results in person—your engagement can influence judges and deepen your network.
To be eligible to compete for this award, students must either be currently enrolled full time in a professional veterinary program, or in a residency or graduate program in toxicologic pathology/general pathology/clinical pathology or a related discipline. The abstract must describe original work of the competitor involving clinical or experimental research that relates to toxicologic pathology. The content may include in vitro or in vivo studies. The award selection will be determined by an independent panel of judges and will be based on the scientific content, relevance to the field of toxicologic pathology, composition of the poster, clarity, and the presenter’s ability to answer questions. Trainees in clinical and/or morphologic pathology are encouraged to apply for the award.
