BSPP Travel Fund

British Society for Plant Pathology

There are four deadlines each year for submission of applications;
The last day of February, 31st May, 31st August and 30th November.

Applications must be received by the deadline between three and six months before the date of the conference or visit at the latest.

The BSPP Travel Fund is open to members of the Society to assist with expenses for conferences, study tours and visits. Students are particularly encouraged to apply. Awards will be made by a Committee of the Board whose decision shall be final. In judging applications, the Committee will take into consideration the nature of the visit in relation to the work of the applicant and the aims of the Society. All applications will be considered on their merits.

Please contact Vicepresident@bspp.org.uk with enquires relating to the Travel fund.

Please note:

  • The size of award will depend upon the number of applications and the funds available, but will not exceed half the total costs of the proposed visit.
  • Awards will not exceed £1,000.
  • For any member, there must be an interval of at least 24 months between successive visits supported by BSPP Travel Awards.
  • No more than one Travel Award will be made to members of a single research group to attend the same conference, join the same study tour, etc.
  • You must have been a member of the Society for at least 12 months by the time that the conference or visit supported by the BSPP Travel Award for which you are applying takes place. Postgraduate students may apply for funds to attend the BSPP Conferences (PPATH/ECPP) if they have been a member for less than 12 months.
  • Applications must be submitted online only (below) by the relevant deadline.
  • Applications can not be submitted for both the travel fund and for a fellowship in the same year.
  • Awards must be taken up within 12 months of notification.
  • The Travel Awards Committee reserves the right to disregard any of these guidelines for applications of the most exceptional merit.
  • If additional costs of care incurred by attending a conference would be prohibitive to attending, the BSPP has initiated a Carer Support Grant – see details, eligibility and how to apply here.

It is a requirement of any award that a report on the conference or other purpose for which the Travel Fund grant is awarded is sent to the vicepresident@bspp.org.uk and the editor of BSPP Newsletter for publication. All travel reports must be submitted within a month of travel

AI Based Application Success Predictor

🎯 1. Fit with BSPP Grant Schemes & Applicant Eligibility

MSc/MRes Bursary (£4,000): for students (UK & international) enrolled in plant pathology‑related MSc/MRes/MPhil programs

Undergraduate Vacation Bursary: for UK undergraduates working in plant pathology labs, supporting living costs and consumables

Fellowships & Travel Funds: available to members (or soon-to-be members) for lab visits, conference attendance, and support for carers .

Promotion Fund: up to £2,000 for outreach efforts to raise public awareness about plant pathology .

2. Demonstrate Clear Objective & Educational/Training Value

For bursaries: a 500‑word personal statement outlining study interest, use of funds, and impact on career goals—plus CV, transcripts, course details, and referee letter

For fellowships/travel: explain the benefit of the activity (e.g., training in a new technique or attending a key meeting), including supervisor/head endorsement

3. Prepare a Feasible Plan & Institutional Support

Bursary users must enroll and register before funds are released; fellows and travelers need institutional backing—such as supervisors or host lab confirmations .

Undergraduate bursary includes clear objectives and defined research activities during summer lab placements

4. Fulfill Reporting, Outreach & Engagement Expectations

Post-grant deliverables vary by award:

MSc/MRes Bursary: final report + four short video blogs .

Travel & Fellowship awards: a newsletter article or report summarizing experience

Promotion Fund: highlight how the funding raised non-expert awareness of plant pathology .

💡 Pro Tips

Apply early and confirm deadlines (e.g., MSc bursary due June 30).

Write a targeted personal statement—explain why plant pathology, how the award helps you, and your intended use of funds.

Gather documents promptly—CV, transcripts, referee letters, enrollment proof.

Plan communication materials—blogs or articles should be well-structured and reflect your experience.

Engage institution and supervisors to ensure smooth fund release and support.

Use video blogs creatively to reach wider audiences; they're appreciated by BSPP.

Any BSPP member who has a child, or cares for a dependent adult at the time of the conference, or who is disabled and in need of additional assistance may apply for this award.

From 2022, Carer and Disability Support Grants can be made independently of Travel Award applications.

You must meet the eligibility criteria for the Travel Award Fund, however, from 2022, students can apply if they have been members for less than 12 months, provided that their supervisor is a member and provides a statement of support.

Applications can be submitted by members at any stages of their professional career, but priority will be given to early career researchers and according to need.

A maximum of one grant per applicant will be supported within a 12 month period between events.

Applicants will be asked to provide:

  •
    • Career stage (undergraduate student/postgraduate student/postdoctoral researcher/within 5 years of appointment to your first position/senior researcher/unemployed)
    • Description of role as caregiver for a dependent adult, child, or relative, or needs for personal assistance.
    • A brief justification of the need for this award (300 words max)
    • Amount requested, up to a maximum of £300, and how you intend to use it. However, under exceptional circumstances, larger awards will be considered. Eligible costs include, but are not limited to: additional childcare, extra care at home for dependents, extra travel costs of carer or disabled member, e.g. providing airfare for your child or for your assistant to accompany you and attend functions with you if needed, flying a relative out to help with care at your home while you’re at the meeting.
  • Successful applicants will be paid after confirmation of attendance is provided.
