Research Fellowship Awards

Crohn's & Colitis Foundation of America

Objective: Research Fellowship Awards are intended to support individuals in the post-doctoral phase of their career, to develop skills related to basic research investigation in the field of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), or Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis.

  • Duration of Award: One to three years
  • Total maximum award per year: $70,000 (subject to annual progress report approval).

Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation/NASPGHAN IBD Young Investigator Awardee:

A single awardee for the annual Crohn's & Colitis Foundation/NASPGHAN IBD Young Investigator Award will be chosen in late June/early July from both the Fall and Spring cycles.

This three-year grant, in partnership with the NASPGHAN Foundation and the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation, is available to research fellows or junior faculty. Applications must propose original translational, epidemiological, or basic scientific research related to pediatric inflammatory bowel disease. Applicants must indicate in their submission for either a Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation Career Development or Research Fellowship Award and that the submission is pediatric IBD-related.  This is important for the study to be considered for the joint Crohn's & Colitis Foundation/NASPGHAN IBD Young Investigator award.

Time Commitment: Awardees must devote a minimum of 80% of his/her professional time directly to the project.

Stipend & Institutional Allowance: Award salary will match applicant’s institutional salary (salaries may be supplemented by the applicant’s institutions), depending on postgraduate year (PGY) level, up to $50,000 per year. Fringe benefits are allowed according to institutional policies, not to exceed 25% of the salary award (up to $12,500 per year). The Foundation will also provide up to $7,500 to be used for non-salary/fringe expenses directly related to the project—including travel to scientific meetings and/or professional membership dues. These funds may not be used to supplement the awardees’ salary/fringe benefits.

The Foundation uses the Proposal Central system for all grants submissions. Just select the Foundation program to which you are applying. All instructions and policies are available at this site. For matters related to submissions for the Research Fellowship Awards please contact N'Dea Johnson at training_awards@crohnscolitisfoundation.org. AI Based Application Success Predictor

1. Alignment with Foundation Priorities

Clinical relevance & translational impact: CCF emphasizes studies addressing pragmatic clinical questions that can be implemented in practice and appear in high-impact journals or guidelines .

Focus on IBD challenges: Projects aligned with the “Challenges in IBD Research” priorities (e.g., personalized medicine, microbiome, health disparities) receive top priority.

👩‍🔬 2. Investigator Career Stage & Track Record

Career Development Awards: Best suited for early-career researchers (≤10 years post-degree) with relevant IBD experience, committed to building independent careers .

Senior Research Awards: Target established investigators with proven track records and preliminary data; fund pilots to support larger NIH-style proposals .

🧪 3. Quality of Study Design & Feasibility

Well-defined hypotheses, appropriate sample sizes, clear timelines, and realistic milestones are essential .

For clinical awards, demonstrated potential to generate influential publications or guide clinical practice is crucial .

🤝 4. Strong Mentorship & Institutional Support

Career Development and Fellowship awards require a committed mentor and evidence of protected research time (e.g., ≥80%) .

Senior awards and clinical investigator grants should include institutional backing, core facilities access, and interdepartmental or multicenter collaboration .

🧬 5. Innovation & Translational Potential

Projects that pioneer personalized approaches—like biomarker-driven treatment selection or new delivery systems—especially when moving toward practice change, perform well .

Innovative product development (e.g., IBD Ventures Smart Pills) reflects CCF’s interest in real-world solutions.

📈 6. Evidence of Future Funding Pathways

Senior Research Award proposals should lay out how generated data will form the basis for larger NIH or foundation funding .

Expectation: funded work leads to high-impact publications, clinical guideline citations, and "follow-on" grants

🔄 7. Structured Peer Review

All grants undergo rigorous peer review by IBD experts; quality of science, relevance, innovation, and feasibility are evaluated

✅ Tips to Strengthen Your CCF Application

Frame your project within the “Challenges in IBD Research” framework to show mission alignment.

Build a strong mentorship team, especially for junior awards, specifying roles and time commitment.

Develop clear milestones, sample size rationale, and time-structured aims.

Highlight translational impact—how it will change practice, lead to guidelines, or inform policy.

Plan for the future—lay out the grant pathway to NIH or similar agencies.

Demonstrate innovation via product or data platform development when applicable.

Ensure institutional support, with confirmed resources and collaborations included.

Individuals who are already well established in the field of IBD research are not considered eligible for this award. Applicants should identify a senior investigator to serve as a mentor throughout the term of the award. At the time of application, applicants must be employed by an institution (public non-profit, private non-profit, or government) engaged in health care and/or health related research within the United States. Research is not restricted by citizenship; however, proof of legal work status is required.

Applicants must hold an MD and/or PhD (or equivalent degree). Candidates holding MD degrees must have two years of experience after receiving their terminal degree —one year of which must be documented research experience relevant to IBD. Applicants holding PhDs must have at least one year of documented post-doctoral research relevant to IBD.  MD applicants in excess of seven years and PhD applicants in excess of five years of receiving their terminal degree should explain how additional support in the post-doctoral phase would benefit their development beyond their current training.

Proposal Eligibility: Proposals MUST be relevant to IBD (Crohn's Disease or ulcerative colitis) and must include a training and a mentoring plan. Only one application is allowed per applicant per submission date. Simultaneous submission of a Senior Research Award and a Research Training Award is not permitted.
