For research in gastroenterology
The fund's returns will promote scientific medical research within the field of gastroenterology in the form of project grants and travel grants.
Travel grants can be applied for for auscultation or research stays at clinics abroad.
Travel allowance does not apply to congress travel.
The fund annually awards a small number of grants worth a maximum of SEK 300,000 and is primarily aimed at researchers who do not already receive grants from donors such as the Swedish Research Council, the Swedish Cancer Society, VINNOVA or similar.
Competence
Eligible to apply are doctors who are members of the Swedish Medical Association in the current year. Ungraduated doctors can also apply. Dissertation not earlier than 10 years before the application year. Membership fee for the current year must be paid and received by us no later than the application deadline. CV must be posted on your personal card in Researchweb.
On "Mina sidor" you can as a member get information about your membership and administer payment of membership fees. NOTE! Association-affiliated members no longer have access to "Mina sidor".
Project grant
Project grants can be applied for up to SEK 300,000 (can be obtained on a maximum of five occasions). Applicants can only submit one application per application period. Notification of the grant will be provided in the latter part of June and must be requested in the same calendar year as it has been granted. The grant is for one year with a disposition period of 18 months, and must be managed by the university/hospital where the research is conducted. Extended disposition period can only be granted if there are exceptional reasons and the request must be made before the expiration date has expired. A maximum of 12 months of extension can be granted.
No later than 24 months after the decision date, you must submit a scientific report and a financial report. The report is made in the Researchweb application system (in your application). Log in for further instructions. Publications must state that support has come from the Gastroenterological Research Fund.
Travel grant for research stay
Travel grants from this fund can be applied for for research stays. A personal invitation from the host institution or equivalent must be attached to the application.
Decisions on allocation will be announced in late June. Travel grants will be requested to a personal account and must be requested no later than six months after the decision. Grants not requested on time will be returned to the fund.
No later than one month after the end of the trip, you must report how the allocated funds have been used. This is done in the application system (in your application). Receipts/documentation of costs in connection with the trip are uploaded to your application. Funds for subsistence (increased living expenses), overhead costs and the like are not granted. If the entire grant has not been used, or if receipts/documentation are missing, the unreported amount must be paid back. A prerequisite for being granted new grants is that previous grants from the fund have been reported.

You must be a current SLS member (individual or association-affiliated) with the membership paid by 1 Feb .
Only physicians with a PhD awarded within the last 10 years (or later with justified leave) are eligible for most project grants.
Specific funds (e.g., Bengt Ihres, Forskarmånader) may have slightly different criteria.
SLS offers multiple funding formats:
Project Grants (2–3 years, ~SEK 500k/year), aimed at physician-led medical research .
Travel and Visiting Scholarships support clinical observerships or learning new techniques (not congress attendance) .
Forskarmånader allow recently graduated doctors to take clinical leave for research .
Choose the precise funding scheme that matches your career stage and needs.
Applications are assessed based on:
Originality and novelty of the research
Scientific rigor and feasibility (methods, timeline, ethics)
Applicant competence and independence
Clinical anchoring—emphasis on patient benefit and healthcare impact .
Project grants must include:
Structured 2-year work plan
Detailed budget (personnel except salary, equipment, consumables)
Consideration of user involvement or patient participation where relevant.
Your project must stand alone—even if you have other funding—and must have completed previous SLS grants before applying again
Budget for project grants is typically up to SEK 500 000/year over 2 years.
No applicant salary paid; funds cover staff, consumables, and overhead.
Remaining balances from previous SLS grants must be cleared .
While not always required, formal endorsement by your institution or department strengthens feasibility and commitment to protected research time.
Maintain updated CV and personal profile in the ResearchWeb portal
Use the ResearchWeb system to apply—ensure your person profile and CV are updated .
Only one application per funding round is allowed, and all previous funding must be fully reported .
Deadlines (e.g., 1 Feb or 1 Sep depending on the call) are strict—late or incomplete submissions aren't accepted.
SLS often launches theme-specific calls (e.g., climate & health, multimorbidity, cancer subspecialties etc.)
