Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in Canada, affecting one in seven men over their lifetime. Despite its high prevalence, significant challenges remain in the fight against this disease.
To address this critical issue, the Cancer Research Society, in partnership with PROCURE, is proud to launch a competition aimed at supporting cutting-edge translational research in prostate cancer.
Through this partnership, $2 million will be allocated to fund 4 groundbreaking research projects focused on:
Budget Period Detail: Indicate, in Canadian dollars, the financial requirements. This grant isvlimited to a maximum of $500,000 over 3 years. Funds may not be transferred outside Canada.
1. 🎯 Canadian-Based Researchers with Independent Labs
Eligibility: Principal Investigators must hold an academic appointment at a Canadian institution and lead their own lab capable of supporting students and postdocs
(postdocs or research scientists without faculty status are not eligible)
Projects must be led locally and contribute to Canada-focused cancer research.
2. 📚 Project Focus Falls Within CRS Priority Areas
Funded research areas include:
Fundamental/basic cancer research
Prevention science
Early translational work (biomarkers, imaging, models)
Environmental causes of cancer (e.g., viruses, pollutants, lifestyle)
Survivorship research (in CIHR partnership)
Note: Clinical trials, psychosocial studies, applied tool development, or economic analyses are ineligible
3. 🧪 Scientific Merit, Originality & Feasibility
Reviewers look for: strong novelty, sound science, clear rationale, and feasible execution within the 2-year grant window (~CAD 67,500/year)
High-quality pilot data boosts credibility—even for junior applicants aiming to build toward larger grants.
4. 🧾 Structured Peer Review and Rigor
Funding decisions are based on peer review by expert scientists and clinicians across Canada
Proposal evaluation uses predefined criteria: significance, innovation, methodology, investigator experience, environment, and impact
5. 🧭 Program-Specific Requirements & Career Stage Alignment
Operating Grants: For faculty-level researchers at all career stages, with one application per PI per cycle
Next Generation of Scientists Awards: Designed for postdocs launching independent labs
Doctoral Research Awards: Only for doctoral students in earlier stages of their PhD (12–36 months in), up to CAD 70,000 over 2 years; Canadian residency required
6. 📆 Timely Submission of Mandatory Letter of Intent (LOI)
CRS uses a two-stage process—LOI first, then invited full application.
For the 2025 Operating Grant:
Call opens Nov 14, 2024
LOI due Dec 10, 2024 (ET)
Full application if invited due Feb 11, 2025
7. 🌱 Track Record & Institutional Support
Funders value strong publication history, prior funding, and institutional support
Successful applications often come from investigators with recognized research environments and mentorship capacity
While independent early-career applicants may compete, established labs have shown consistent success.
Success Factor | What it Means for Your Application |
---|---|
Canadian academic PI | Must hold faculty appointment and lead an independent lab |
Fit within CRS mandates | Focus on basic/translational cancer research (not tools or behavioral studies) |
Scientific rigor & novelty | Clear innovation, strong pilot data, feasible design |
Peer-reviewed evaluation | Based on standard criteria across CRS committees |
Career-stage alignment | Submit to category (Operating, Postdoc, Doctoral) that matches you |
Timely LOI submission | Required first step—missing LOI means no invitation for full proposal |
Institutional strength | Evidence of strong mentorship, infrastructure, and prior productivity |
Principal investigator and co-applicants must hold a research position at a Canadian institution and be able to hold research funds at their institution. Collaborators may be affiliated with institutions outside of Canada however, cross-Canada collaborations are encouraged.
