We provide grants for small-scale scientific research projects in the field of asthma and COPD. In addition, we support activities undertaken by and on behalf of patients with asthma or COPD. Annually, we have an amount of about EUR 250,000 available to finance 6 to 8 projects, which translates to Eur 30,000 – 35,000 per project.
The most current NWO tables will be leading for personnel costs and surcharges.
From 2024, all grant applications must be submitted digitally. The questions correspond to those of the existing forms. If you have already submitted an application in the past 5 years, you received an email asking you to activate your account. You can also find the grant applications for which you were an applicant or co-applicant on the new website.
The deadline for submitting project grants has been set on March 1 and October 1.
Before you start filling out the grant application:
- CVs of applicant and co-applicants must be uploaded as separate files.
- When applying for a grant for personnel costs, the completed personnel costs form must be uploaded.
- An application does not have to be completed in one go. Interim storage is possible.
Projects must directly benefit patients with asthma, COPD, or related airway diseases—whether clinical, basic, educational, or patient-centered .
A clear link to improving diagnosis, management, or prevention—and alignment with the Foundation’s mission—is essential.
Typical grants range from €30,000–35,000, with an overall annual budget around €250,000, funding 6–8 projects
Projects must be intentionally small-scale, with well-defined scope and justification suited to the funding level.
Research proposals—whether basic science or applied—should show clear innovation, methodological rigor, and defined relevance to the field .
Projects that demonstrate significance and advancement over existing work score higher.
The Young Investigator (Best Paper) Award is open annually to researchers under 40 who are first or last authors on a high-quality publication in 2023 .
Publications should be original, peer-reviewed, in the field of asthma/COPD, and categorized as basic or applied research.
Submissions for the Young Investigator Award are judged by:
Innovation (fundamental novelty)
Clinical relevance
Significance of findings, with weighting depending on research category .
Demonstrating clear impact and advancement in the manuscript is critical.
Project grants have two annual deadlines—15 February and 15 September—or rolling submissions for other categories like PhD stipends or conference attendance .
Adhering to these timelines, submitting complete documentation, and following their streamlined digital process (implemented in 2024) is vital .
