This grant will fund research that focuses on any or all of these areas:
This grant is aimed at supporting rising stars who are experienced with the use of tMCS for cardiogenic shock. The grant recipient(s) will have already established a track record in cardiogenic shock and will aim to further develop their career(s) in this area.
The intent is that the grant recipient(s) will be junior faculty who has not previously received a major grant, and is dedicated to a career in the use of MCS to optimize outcomes in cardiogenic shock. It is anticipated that the individual will be a clinician/clinician scientist (physician, allied health or nurse) at an active cardiogenic shock program with a faculty appointment in either cardiology, critical care, or cardiac surgery.
Purpose
The purpose of this grant is to support research that would enhance the understanding and management of cardiogenic shock in the setting of heart failure to optimize clinical outcomes and promote native heart recovery using temporary mechanical circulatory support (tMCS).
Grant Details
One or more grants will be awarded for the funding duration of two years at a budget of up to $140,000 USD.
Most grants target rising stars — junior faculty who have completed training within 3 years (for Career Development) or have begun their faculty position before grant start.
Applicants must demonstrate previous work in heart and/or lung transplantation, mechanical support, or heart failure .
Eligible applicants must have an academic appointment at an accredited institution and demonstrate institutional support, such as lab space, faculty appointment letters (if still in training), and departmental backing .
Consistent membership in ISHLT is required throughout the application and funding period .
Grants emphasize critical areas like mechanical circulatory support (MCS), transplantation, ICU care, biomarkers, AI tools, and biomarker validation .
Innovation challenge grants favor novel technologies—e.g., noninvasive dd-cfDNA, AI-based profiling, ex vivo lung perfusion.
Projects should be well-scoped with a realistic timeline, aiming to substantially impact clinical practice within 1–5 years .
Feasibility, including clear methodology and data endpoints, is critical .
ISHLT grants typically cover salary, supplies, statistical support, with strict limits (e.g., indirect costs ≤10%, no excessive overhead or equipment budgets).
Funding is phased with milestones—e.g., Career Development grants disburse quarterly tied to reports .
Applications are evaluated by expert committees scoring aims, significance, innovation, approach, feasibility, and investigators’ track record .
Factor | What to Emphasize |
---|---|
Early-career status | Position yourself as a rising faculty with a focused research trajectory. |
Institutional support | Include faculty appointment, support letters, and resource descriptions. |
ISHLT engagement | Maintain active membership and participation. |
Clinical/scientific salience | Center on transplantation, MCS, biomarkers, AI, or cardiogenic shock. |
Methodological soundness | Clearly outline study design, endpoints, and realistic timelines. |
Budget discipline | Request only permitted expenses; follow funding structure and reporting schedule. |
Strong presentation | Craft clear, concise aims; highlight innovation and capacity to deliver results. |
To maximize your competitiveness, present yourself as a well-prepared early-career faculty member with:
A focused, innovative project in priority ISHLT areas (transplantation, MCS, biomarkers, AI).
Institutional backing through faculty appointment and resources.
ISHLT engagement and membership.
Sound methodology, realistic feasibility, and budgeting.
A scientific narrative ready for rigorous peer review.
