This Excellence in Energy Research and Innovation award is aimed at organisations that have researched and developed novel energy-related technologies, processes or systems, that overcome barriers to uptake, support policy objectives and strengthen national capacity for world-class research, development and demonstration (RD&D). Research projects should have outputs that accelerate delivery of Ireland’s clean energy ambitions and early-stage pilot and demonstration projects are welcome.
This winner will receive a €15,000 bursary.
Select the right grant—SEAI offers diverse schemes for business decarbonization (e.g., EXEED, Energy Contracting Support), community projects, and RD&D .
Proposals must clearly match the scheme's aims, such as energy performance contracts for contracting support or high-efficiency design under EXEED.
Technical excellence and novelty must score highly (~40%), alongside sector relevance and implementation efficiency (~60%) .
Value for money is rigorously assessed, especially for large grants (e.g., €500k+), with caps based on CO₂ savings per tonne.
Business and community grants mandate multi-sector partnerships—commercial, public, community, or financing entities
RD&D grants for universities or public bodies should integrate industry or policy stakeholders where relevant .
Proposals must include:
Detailed energy audit and performance goals
Quality management systems (especially for One Stop Shop)
Clear project timelines and procurement strategy.
Applications must be complete and compliant, including eligibility declarations, financial statements, VAT and State Aid documents .
Late or partial submissions are rolled over or rejected.
Many grants are open year-round, but cycle dates matter (e.g., community grants by monthly submission deadlines) .
Larger-expenditure grants usually involve a staged application: eligibility → technical evaluation → detailed review

🛠️ Tips to Improve Your Application
Begin with a clear audit (e.g., BER or energy audit) to quantify baseline and targets.
Form strategic partnerships with public/private/community bodies to strengthen collaboration.
Build a value-for-money case, tying savings to benchmarks (e.g., tCO₂/data).
Address all compliance items, including State Aid rules, declarations, and financials.
Meet deadlines and prepare for stepwise application processes, especially for large grants.
Include strong quality assurance systems (ISO 9001-like), especially for One Stop Shop or contracting schemes.
Applications are welcome from companies, 3rd level educational bodies, public sector bodies and semi-state bodies involved in impactful energy research and innovation.
