NordForsk announces funding for a project that will produce a report to support the formulation of the Nordic guidelines for research involving Indigenous people.
Call deadline: 14.08.2025 at 13:00 (CET)
Available budget: NOK 0.5 million
Important: Please read the instructions in the application form as well as the call text to access all the necessary information to write your proposal. You can use the preview form function to see the instructions in the application form.
Background and tasks
There are several guidelines and roadmaps that support researchers in conducting research involving Indigenous people and help Indigenous people to become aware of their rights as participants of research. Such guidelines are crucially needed for enhancing Indigenous peoples' self-determination in relation to knowledge production. However, there is a lack of common guidelines for Indigenous research in the Nordic countries. There is, therefore, a need to map and review the guidelines in the Nordic countries and in Canada, and when relevant, use guidelines of other Indigenous people and global guidelines like CARE principles of Global Indigenous Alliance as benchmarks. The Nordic Working Group, consisting of members engaged in Indigenous research at Nordic academic institutions and the Saami Council, has asked NordForsk to initiate a call for proposals to support the development process.
The project funded under the call will produce a report for the Nordic Working Group. The report will support the formulation of the Nordic guidelines for research involving Indigenous people.
The tasks of the project are to:
The project is set to begin in September 2025. NordForsk will facilitate a kick-off meeting where the project’s researchers will meet with the Nordic Working Group on September 17, 2025 in Oslo. During this meeting, the project’s researchers will refine the project plan and timetable in collaboration with the Nordic Working Group. The project leader and key researchers are expected to take part in the meeting. The report’s content, including its analysis and recommendations, should be fully prepared for communication to the Nordic Working Group by 15 March 2026. The Nordic Working Group and the project’s researchers will finalise the Nordic guidelines for research involving Indigenous people by June 2026.
Financial framework
Applicants are invited to apply for funding to establish a project with a budget of a maximum of NOK 0.5 million and a duration of up to one year. The intention is to provide funding for one project under this call.
Funding may be used for:
Indirect costs and overhead can be included. NordForsk does not apply any fixed rate or model for calculating indirect costs for research projects. Such costs should be determined by the applicant’s institutions according to their rules and models, and applicants are advised to consult their respective institutions for further guidelines. The feasibility of the budgets will be assessed.
Salaries for applicants not affiliated with a research institution in the Nordic countries cannot be claimed as part of the project costs. Organisations based in the Russian Federation or Belarus or Russian-occupied territories of Ukraine may not participate in the project funded by this call.
Submission of proposals
The project leader must submit the application form and annexes electronically through the NordForsk Call and Application Portal no later than 13.00 CET on 14 August 2025. The submission must contain all supporting documents as requested below:
1. Nordic Added Value & Multi-Country Consortium
Your project must generate clear added value for the Nordic region, such as shared infrastructure, data harmonization, increased regional mobility, or addressing unique Nordic challenges—especially in tie-breaker cases
Include partners from at least three Nordic countries (Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden—or autonomous areas), and ideally also Baltic participants when eligible
2. High Scientific Quality & Relevance to the Call
Independent peer review scores prioritize originality, sound methodology, and disciplinary fit
Your proposal must explicitly address the aims and objectives of the specific call and any related goals like SDGs, indigenous issues, or Arctic relevance
3. Interdisciplinarity & Societal Impact
Most NordForsk calls emphasize interdisciplinary research—projects must integrate at least two scientific domains and demonstrate how they will interact
Embedding Open Science practices (open access, FAIR data management) is increasingly crucial across all calls
4. Equity, Diversity & Inclusion (EDI) & Early-Career Integration
For calls with EDI frameworks (e.g., Arctic or Indigenous studies), concrete plans for integrating EDI—such as recruitment, mentorship, and outcome monitoring—are evaluated rigorously
Demonstrate integration of early-career researchers with meaningful leadership roles
5. Feasibility & Robust Planning
Feasibility includes clear methodological approaches, realistic timelines, risk management, and integration of EDI and Indigenous/community frameworks where required.
A detailed, justified budget and alignment with national funding regulations is essential—NordForsk often uses real or virtual common-pot funding models
6. Full Compliance & Timely Submission
Applications must be submitted via the NordForsk portal, include all mandatory attachments (project plan, budget tables), and comply with length and format limits—fail to comply, and your application will be automatically rejected
Only fully completed and resubmitted drafts before the deadline are accepted
