Cancer Research Fellowships Victoria- Early-Career Research Fellowships

Cancer Council Victoria and the Victorian Government acting through the Victorian Department of Health, are working together to deliver Cancer Research Fellowships Victoria. By combining resources, this collaboration strengthens Victoria’s cancer research landscape, fosters innovation, and accelerates the translation of research into improved outcomes for people with cancer.

Cancer Research Fellowships Victoria supports early-career and mid-career researchers to undertake high-quality translational cancer research that will improve the prevention, detection, treatment and care for people affected by cancer. Fellowships are available to researchers who have not previously received significant research funding, helping to establish them as future leaders in cancer research.

There are two Fellowship streams available for both Early-Career Research Fellowships and Mid-Career Research Fellowships: biomedical research and non-biomedical research.

Early-Career Fellowships are available with a maximum of $150,000 available per year, per fellowship, for three years (maximum $450,000 per Fellowship). Applicants can apply for either the Biomedical Research Stream or the Non-Biomedical Research Stream.

In addition to general fellowships, targeted Biomedical fellowships are available for research:

that supports the diagnosis and/or treatment of mesothelioma;
into non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Special consideration will be given to applicants researching gastrointestinal non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.

Successful applications must clearly address cause, prevention, detection, treatment, or supportive care of cancer. CCV places particular emphasis on translational and high-impact research, spanning biomedical, behavioral, epidemiology, and allied health domains.

2. 👶 Career Stage Fit & Eligibility

Cancer Research Fellowships Victoria:

Early-Career: ≤ 5 years post-PhD; up to $450k over 3 years.

Mid-Career: 5–15 years post-PhD; up to $700k over 4 years.

Must be Australian/New Zealand citizen or permanent resident and not hold equivalent salary support.

Grants-in-Aid: Team-based research funding up to AUD 120k/year for up to 3 years, available to researchers at Victorian institutions.

Venture Grants: High-risk, high-reward projects—typically $250k/year, 1–2 years—supporting unconventional ideas.

Summer Studentships: For undergraduate students; project-based funding (~$3,000 over 6 weeks) to support work in Victorian labs.

3. 🧠 Scientific Quality, Innovation & Feasibility

Applications are evaluated on novelty, methodological rigor, translational potential, and feasibility.

Fellowships/career awards need defined milestones, deliverables, and risk management.

Venture Grants prioritize disruptive ideas that break conventional norms.

4. 🏢 Institutional Environment & Leadership Pipeline

Fellowship applicants are expected to be supported by Victorian institutions and demonstrate institutional backing for the fellowship.

For early- and mid-career awards, letters from research administration confirming role and support are critical.

Research teams applying for Grants-in-Aid must show capacity to lead and deliver projects within Victorian research ecosystems.

5. 🌟 Career Development & Translation Potential

Fellowships aim to launch future leaders—demonstration of career trajectory and plans for follow-on funding (NHMRC, national grants) are prioritized.

Funded work should lead to output: publications, clinical uptake, datasets, or impact beyond academia.

6. 🧑‍🤝‍🧑 Community & Stakeholder Engagement

Some schemes (e.g. Venture Grants, Projects-in-Aid, or Palliative care grants) value community participation, stakeholder co-design, or patient engagement.
