Host: Dr. von Haunersches Kinderspital,Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München
The Dr. von Hauner Children’s Hospital is a 100-bed freestanding university hospital exclusively dedicated to the care of children. The Hospital is part of the university complex of Ludwig-Maximilians-University of Munich, Germany. As one of the most prestigious institutions of its kind in Germany, it draws referrals from all over the nation as well as Europe especially for very rare and complex diseases. The hospital is attached and intimately intertwined to its research core laboratories, which together draw one sixth of all research grants given out by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) given in any year for pediatric research within Germany. This academic mindset has made this hospital a flagship in translational research and outstanding clinical care.
Among other specialties, the hospital consists of 3 neonatal care units (one onsite, two off site) and 2 pediatric intensive care units (one on site, one off site). The pediatric surgery department within the Dr. von Hauner Children’s Hospital consists of a large variety of subspecialties including urologic surgery, plastic surgery, craniospinal surgery, trauma surgery, oncologic surgery, gastrointestinal surgery, and hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery. Physicians of the Dr. von Hauner Children’s Hospital are an integral part of the corresponding pediatric solid organ transplant surgery programs, which include heart, lung, liver, and kidney, but which are performed off site.
4-12 weeks curriculum
The typical stay of incoming fellows is approximately one month, however, shorter or longer stents can be easily accommodated.
Fellows will be supported to settle down into their new environment (find appropriate accommodation, locate amenities, etc.). A desk space will be allocated in the sense that the fellow can share all of our residents’ desk spaces on the wards. The fellows are encouraged to bring their institutions white coat and name badge for identification.
Full induction (safety, laboratory practices, personal welfare, etc.) will be provided by the University’s designated staff and by myself. I will arrange an initial meeting with the fellow to discuss the objectives of the training. The objectives can be heavily adjusted to the needs of the fellow. If only one particular area of surgical care is the main objective of the fellows stay, then proper planning ahead of time is warranted to ensure case volume and presence of the corresponding surgeons.
The fellow will be invited to participate in all activities of the Surgical Team. They will be able to engage in patient care during rounds and on the ward as well as in the operating room with hands on experience. However, for strict legal obligations, fellows cannot act independently or without supervision. Fellows must act at the discretion of the supervising physician or resident at all times.
Fellows are encouraged to engage in clinical research during their stay and are able to write a manuscript or an abstract for publication, if such desire exists.
Of note, the hospital’s main language is German. Unless treating international patients all patient rounds and clinics are conducted in German. Having said that, essentially every physician in the hospital speaks English and people are generally willing and able to set aside time to explain patient details or insights. Therefore, in the past, not being able to speak German has never been a limitation for incoming fellows.
All throughout the training any peculiar challenges or specific requests of a fellow will be fully considered to ensure a responsive, relevant and adequate training plan is developed for them.
A certificate will be given at the end of finishing the fellowship. Alumni are encouraged to stay in close contact with the program for further reference in the future, if desired by the alumni.
The Dr. von Hauner Children’s Hospital is located in the very center of the city at “Goetheplatz”. Unfortunately, we are unable to provide accommodation. Most incoming fellows search for accommodation via www.airbnb.com. We encourage incoming fellows to do this as early as possible due to high demand of accommodation in the city’s center.
Munich is one of the safest cities in Europe and perhaps the world. There are no areas of concern in which an accommodation is not recommended.
Transportation
Everyone in Munich uses the local train services for transportation. The city is exceptionally well connected via public transportation and tickets for rides can be bought at each station as well as a mobile app called MVV.
