University of Milano-Bicocca
(5/5) - 1 reviews

University of Milano-Bicocca, Italy

Main Areas of Interest

Mass Spectrometry Infrastructure, Proteomics and Metabolomics

Workplace: School of Medicine and Surgery, University of Milano-Bicocca, Mass Spectrometry Infrastructure, Proteomics and Metabolomics Unit

The main research areas of our group are:

  • Discovery and validation of novel biomarkers to aid personalised medicine strategies in human diseases
  • Understanding the molecular basis of human diseases onset, progression and response to therapy
  • Development of advanced mass spectrometry methods for proteomics, metabolomics, lipidomics and spatial omics.

Experimental techniques/Technical approaches you will learn during your program here:

  • Theoretical basis of mass spectrometry techniques applicable in the study of neurological disorders
  • Experimental design compatible with MS-based omics experiments
  • Sample preparation of tissue homogenates and biofluids for MS-based metabolomics/lipidomics and proteomics studies
  • Sample preparation of co-cultured neuron and glial cells for MS-based omics studies
  • Tissue sectioning using a cryostat for spatial omics studies using MS imaging
  • Sample preparation of fresh-frozen brain tissue for spatial omics studies using MS imaging
  • Liquid chromatography using reverse phase (RP, C18), and hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography (HILIC) columns
  • Nano liquid chromatography (nanoLC) using RP, C18, columns
  • NanoDrop protein quantification
  • LC-ESI-Ion Mobility-MS for metabolomics and lipidomics of complex biological samples
  • nLC-ESI-MS/MS for label-free quantitative proteomics of complex biological samples
  • MALDI-MSI for spatial omics of fresh-frozen brain tissue
  • Data analysis of metabolomics/lipidomics datasets to uncover altered metabolic in brain tissue
  • Data analysis of label-free quantitative proteomics datasets to uncover altered protein abundance in brain tissue
  • Data analysis of spatial omics datasets for mapping the molecular alterations in brain tissue.

6-12 weeks curriculum

  • The fellow will be provided with an intensive introduction to the field of mass-spectrometry based omics through both theoretical and experimental training. Initially, interactive theory sessions will allow the individuals to grasp the key technical aspects required for the experimental training and discuss with the laboratory team the various applications of mass spectrometry that can be beneficial to their biomedical research career. From here, experimental training will be provided in three MS-based disciplines: untargeted metabolomics/lipidomics, untargeted proteomics, and spatial omics. Each fellow will be able to perform sample preparation protocols themselves, guided by the supervisor, and will follow each experiment in its entirety. As such, the fellows will also be trained in how to interpret and analyse the highly complex omics datasets generated in biomedical research
  • In addition, the laboratory team will be available to engage with the fellows in order to answer any further questions that may arise or deepen the fellow’s knowledge in complementary arguments.Accordingly, the fellows will be encouraged to participate in the laboratory’s weekly meeting in order to gain further insights into the workings of a metabolomics and proteomics laboratory and actively contribute to the discussion of ongoing research
  • All throughout the training any peculiar challenges or specific requests of a fellow will be fully considered to ensure a responsive, relevant and adequate training plan is developed for them.

This program allows Merit Applications. This program allows merit-based applications for virtual and onsite clinical and research programs. If you are successfully awarded under this category, Trialect or the host mentor will cover the tuition fee only. All applications will be evaluated based on merit. Due to the high level of competition, the chances of being selected under the merit category are quite limited.

It was a great pleasure and honour to spend 6 weeks in the modern and well-equipped laboratories of the School of Medicine and Surgery University Milano-Biccoca. The supervisor and other professors are full of knowledge, dedicated and ready to explain everything thoroughly. During my training, I was involved in metabolomics, lipidomics, proteomics and MALDI imaging analysis, so I had opportunities to learn to prepare samples, as well as to work with sophisticated analytical instruments and use various useful software tools. I was surrounded by excellent colleagues in an inspiring environment, so I felt like a part of the team from the beginning. In my free time, a had opportunities to visit other Italian cities, go sightseeing, learn about Italian history and tradition, and enjoy Italian food. I will always be very grateful for the experience and knowledge I got. Unforgettable summer is behind me thanks to the great people I met and Trialect.
