Aristotle University of Thessaloniki
The main research areas of our group are:
Bioanalysis and biomarker research.
Metabolomics, Genomics, Foodomics and Bioanalysis including the analysis of pharmaceuticals and drug metabolism.
Discovery of markers for diagnosis, prognosis & therapeutic/nutritional intervention of disease.
Development of multi-analyte quantitative methods for biological samples (blood, urine, feces and so forth)
Experimental techniques you will learn during your program here:
6-12 weeks curriculum
Fellows will be supported to settle down into their new environment (find appropriate accommodation, locate amenities, etc.). A desk space will be allocated. Full induction (safety, laboratory practices, personal welfare, etc.) will be provided by Biomic’s designated staff and by myself. I will arrange a series of initial meetings with the fellow to discuss the objectives of the training and the expected mechanisms of their fulfilment. Experimental plans with realistic timelines will then be decided.
The fellow will be fully trained to run the experiments (HPLC, LC-MS/MS, GC-MS/MS). They will then be allowed to attempt the experiment themselves, with the trainer present during their first run. They will be able to engage with me (supervisor) and other members of the laboratory to discuss any aspects of the general running of the laboratory or specific protocols that they require clarifications on. They will also be trained in how to analyse and interpret their data using commercial software (MarkerLynx, Simca, TargetScreener and other) and open-free software (MetaboAnalyst, METLIN etc) as well as bespoke lab-built scripts (Python, R). The study will definitely involve efforts for translational research : biochemical interpretation, link to physiology and the theme in research (disease, intervention or other) typically in collaboration with leading clinical-biology partners from the local of from collaborating Universities/Institutes. I will arrange a weekly or bi-weekly meeting with the fellow to discuss and reflect on their progress and decide the next set of experiments based on data generated. A fellow must keep adequate and accurate records of their work using the laboratory book provided.
The fellow will participate in research group meetings and other academic activities within the group, including attending relevant bespoke training on research career development (e.g., on manuscript writing, grant writing, networking, etc.). They will also be encouraged to present their work orally at a research group meeting at least once before they complete their visit.
Towards the end of the training, I will have a meeting with the fellow to discuss plans to present or/and publish their work (if enough data collected) or disseminate their findings in a future conference. They will also be assisted to identify existing or future opportunities, globally or within their original work environment, that the training has empowered them to be eligible and competitive for and how they can be assisted to access them and also integrate the knowledge and skills gained into their further research or professional practice roles.
All throughout the training any peculiar challenges or specific requests of a fellow will be fully considered to ensure a responsive, relevant and adequate training plan is developed for them.
Our core bioanalytical group has strong track record and wide recognition in our field. The BIOMIC_AUTh team has the experience, the know-how and the infrastructure to support research projects on metabolic profiling of virtually any type of sample necessary.
The team has >32 years experience in developing and validating analytical technologies in life science research
Guest house/accommodation near the lab (4-5 bus stops)
Our Lab is located in the Center for Inter-Disciplinary Research of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, 10th km Thessaloniki- Thermi, Innovation Area of Thessaloniki, 57001 Thermi, Greece (Building B, Lab B1.4); it is not located in the main campus in the centre of Thessaloniki. We are close to the Airport Makedonia.
You may use the public transportation (BUS 36, 36A, 36B, 36K, 36E, 36P, 36H, 36Y, 36Z) or consult the Intelligent Urban Mobility Management and Traffic Control System implemented in Thessaloniki to get to the University Campus in Thermi.
Rooms and apartments:
The majority of students/researchers rent an apartment or a room in the center of the city as transportation towards Center for Inter-Disciplinary Research of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki is equally convenient and they get to enjoy the benefits of living in the city center.
Finding an apartment is not an easy task.
What is the best location I should look for?
Thermi, Triadi, Voulgari, Nea Elvetia, Rotonda, Navarinou square, Agias Sofias, Olympou, Agiou Dimitriou area, Faliro-Theageneio, Evzonon and 40 Ekklisies are good choices, due to the short distance from the city’s centre and the multiple bus stops.

This program allows Merit Applications. This program allows merit-based applications for virtual and onsite clinical and research programs. If you are successfully awarded under this category, Trialect or the host mentor will cover the tuition fee only. All applications will be evaluated based on merit. Due to the high level of competition, the chances of being selected under the merit category are quite limited.
The fellow will be fully trained to run the experiments (HPLC, LC-MS/MS, GC-MS/MS).
