Lecturing and Teaching: The present workshop aims to inform mental health professionals and provide specialized knowledge in the neuropsychology of major depression and schizophrenia which will assist them in their clinical practice and research. This clinical workshop is designed for psychologists, neuropsychologists, psychiatrists, psychotherapists, social workers, GPs, occupational therapists, nurses, neuroscientists
Education Credits: Approved by the British Psychological Society Learning Centre for the purposes of Continuing Professional Development (CPD). All participants will receive a Certificate of Attendance if they participate fully in the workshop and CPD credits by The British Psychological Society. The clinical workshop is organized and taught by Dr. Alexandra Pentaraki, PhD, CPsychol, AFBPsS.

Tasks and Timeline:
Module 1 (week 1) Introduction to the diagnostic criteria for Major Depression and Schizophrenia and differential diagnosis. The course of neurocognitive deficits in schizophrenia. The role of General Intelligence (IQ) and its relationship with neurocognitive impairment in schizophrenia.
Module 2 (week 2) Depression in schizophrenia and its assessment. Introduction to the clinical neuropsychology of schizophrenia. Neurocognitive function in major depression.
Module 3 & Module 4 (week 3 & week 4) The relationship between cognitive dysfunction and the symptoms of schizophrenia. Introduction to the neuropsychological evaluation of schizophrenia ΙΙ. Introduction to the neuropsychological evaluation of major depression. In this week and in week 4 the students are asked to start their clinical practice either with real patients or with case studies. Their clinical practice involves the study of specific neuropsychological and psychometric tests, the assessment of patients/or the use of case studies that are derived from real patients, the scoring and interpretation of the assessments and a short report writing.
Module 5 (week 5) Cognitive remediation in schizophrenia. Neuropsychological techniques for the management of schizophrenia. The technique of normalization in the management of schizophrenia. The effect of Expressed Emotion on the prevention of relapse. Neurocognitive interventions in major depression. The effect of expressed emotion on the prevention of relapse. Interventions-Cognitive therapy andMindfulness in the management and prevention of relapse in major depression.
Assignments: Each week the students need to write up short assignments that involve the study of research papers and the writing up of summaries. There are also other exercises that the students need to complete.
Exam: At the end of week IV they will have to answer a short MCQ on the learning material.
