Understanding Visa Requirements

Visa requirements for Non-US citizens and Permanent Residents: B1 visas are intended for temporary professional visitors traveling to the United States. The Program provides an invitation letter to apply for a B1 visa for 2-4 week clinical rotations/traineeship if the visitor meets the eligibility criteria. All applicants must demonstrate their intent to stay for a specific duration and leave afterward, possess the necessary funds to cover trip expenses, have a residence outside the U.S., exhibit strong ties to their home country, and meet the U.S. government's criteria for admission. The Program does not support individuals applying for J1, F1, or H1B visas.  When applying for a B-1 visa, you must provide several documents to support your application. While the specific requirements may vary depending on your circumstances and the consulate or embassy where you apply, here are some commonly requested documents for a B-1 visa application:

  • Valid passport: Your passport should be valid for at least six months beyond your intended stay in the United States.
  • Visa application form: You must complete the nonimmigrant visa application form, typically the DS-160 form, online and print the confirmation page.
  • Visa application fee payment receipt: You must provide proof of payment for the visa application fee.
  • Photographs: You will be required to submit one or two passport-sized photographs that meet the specifications set by the U.S. Embassy or Consulate.
  • Invitation letter from the host institution detailing your traineeship. The most important thing is that you should not receive any stipend or salary during the traineeship.
  • Travel itinerary: Prepare a detailed itinerary that includes your intended travel dates, places you plan to visit, accommodation details, and any relevant travel reservations.
  • Supporting documents: Other appropriate documents, e.g., letters from your employer or evidence of your professional qualifications.
  • Financial documentation: It is important to demonstrate that you have sufficient funds to cover your expenses during your stay in the United States. This can be shown through bank statements, pay stubs, or other financial documents.
  • Ties to your home country: To establish your intention to return to your home country, you may need to provide documents that demonstrate strong links, such as proof of employment/schooling, property ownership, family ties, or educational commitments.

Disclaimer: Remember that the specific requirements and procedures can vary, so it is advisable to consult the U.S. Embassy or Consulate website where you will be applying or seek guidance from an immigration attorney for the most accurate and up-to-date information for your particular situation.
