Gastroenterology Research Group, University of Otago Christchurch (UOC), New Zealand
The main research themes of the group are:
The research activities undertaken within the group encompass laboratory based, clinical and translational projects. The projects focus upon several specific gut conditions, such as coeliac disease, enteric infections (e.g. Helicobacter pylori), inflammatory bowel disease and allergic gut diseases. Although the clinical focus of the group is centered upon these conditions in childhood, much of the work (especially the laboratory projects) have relevance to all ages.
Laboratory Experimental techniques typically utilized within the group include:
Epithelial cell culture and related aspects of management of cell lines, cell co-culture models of inflammation, bacterial culture, cell viability/toxicity assays, permeability studies, cell fractioning, plasma/membrane protein isolation, qualitative and quantitative PCR, ELISA, western blots, protein assays, dot/blot studies, flow cytometry, fluorescence and confocal microscope, immunohistochemistry
Other research methodologies: Patient characterization, Patient/disease outcomes, Epidemiology studies, Clinical studies
Outline of typical program (6-12 weeks)
Orientation and introduction to city; Initial orientation to department, school and laboratory, including allocated spaces; Introduction to key staff/other students; Induction processes (registration with university, ID card etc); Laboratory induction and orientation (health and safety, and detailed orientation of specific laboratory activities), where required.
Initial discussions with relevant staff about designated project, outlining expectations, tasks, roles and timelines. Goals and objectives will be confirmed. Detailed experimental plans and steps will be planned within these goals and timelines. Trainees will be expected to read widely around the area of their work. Critical thinking skills will be developed and enhanced at every step.
In laboratory-based projects, each experimental step will be guided by a research assistant with adequate training to ensure that the trainee is safe and able to perform the work appropriately. After suitable training period, the trainee will be expected to perform their roles independently (but with adequate support and supervision at all times). Trainees will record all steps of their experiments and maintain clean and tidy records. General laboratory requirements will apply also.
All interested applicants should submit their CV, LOI, and at least two references to traineeships@trialect.com
In the instance of trainees undertaking a project that is not laboratory-based, appropriate tools and methods will be taught and supported.
The trainee will be expected to assist and contribute to the analysis and interpretation of data arising from their work. Appropriate skills and resources (e.g. software programs, statistical tools) will be available and/or provided. Trainees will learn through each of these steps.
Trainees will be expected to meet regularly with principal investigator (weekly) and to meet/liaise daily with key research assistant/fellow. In addition, the trainees will be expected to attend group research meetings and to present their work in progress (or completed) in this setting. Trainees will also be expected to attend other research meetings/talks in the wider University research environment (this will include weekly research seminars and other periodic events). Furthermore, trainees will be encouraged to attend other training and learning activities when these occur (for instance, a statistics training course held from time to time). In addition, trainees will have opportunities to interact with other students within and outside of the research group.
As their work proceeds and especially towards the end of the period of study, discussions will be held as to the next steps in the work (including plans for presentation of work arising at an appropriate national or international forum, and publication of the work). Trainees will be expected to contribute to the development of these dissemination plans. Furthermore, there will be opportunities for trainees to develop and enhance their academic writing skills.
