Biochemistry and Metastatic Signaling

University of Patras

Galatea Kallergi is Associate Professor of Biochemistry, Department of Biology,
University of Patras, Greece. Her research focuses on cancer biology, particularly the detection and characterization of circulating tumor cells (CTCs), development of liquid biopsy diagnostic tools, and the study of micrometastatic disease.

Main Areas of Interest

Main Areas of Interest:

  • Overview of Liquid Biopsy (LB)
Types of analytes: Circulating Tumor Cells (CTCs) and Extracellular
     Vesicles (EVs).
Characteristics and properties of CTCs and EVs.
Role of CTCs and EVs in cancer progression, metastasis, and disease
    monitoring.
  • Liquid Biopsy Applications in Cancer Research
Isolation and molecular characterization of CTCs and EVs for disease monitoring.
Integrating LB techniques to influence treatment decisions and improve patient
    outcomes.
Progressing precision oncology through utilizing LB in personalized medicine.

 Specialties

  • Liquid biopsy
  • Circulating Tumor Cells (CTCs)
  • Extracellular Vesicles (EVs)
  • Cancer metastasis
  • Precision Oncology

Techniques you will learn:
1. General knowledge of Liquid Biopsy

  • Isolation and Enrichment of CTCs and EVs: Techniques for
isolating CTCs and EVs from blood samples, using size-based
filtration, microfluidic platforms and density gradient methods.
  • Immunofluorescence (IF) Staining: Methods for phenotypic
characterization, using established IF staining panels.

2. Molecular and Functional Analysis

  • Microscopy and Imaging Techniques: Training in high-resolution
imaging for detailed visualization of CTC morphology and EV
    structure.
  •  Molecular Analysis: Techniques such as immunostaining, qPCR and
Immunoblotting for studying molecular profiles in CTCs and EVs.

3. Technology Development

  •  Microfluidic Platforms: Hands-on experience with microfluidic
systems for improved cancer cell culture and characterization.
  •  Multi-Step Assay Development: Techniques for designing sequential
assays to analyze distinct features in CTCs and EVs from the same
    sample, enhancing diagnostic insights.

4. Drug Response and Therapeutic Investigation

  •  Functional Assays for Investigating Drug Impact: Techniques for
assessing the effects of anti-cancer drugs on cell viability, apoptosis
and invasion potential in cancer and patient-derived cell lines.
  • Translation to Cultured CTCs: Developing protocols to adapt drug
response studies for cultured CTCs derived from patient samples.

Curriculum
2-week in-person laboratory study. Details will be provided to the trainees.

Accommodation

  • The participant will arrange their own accommodations close location to the institute.
  • You may also consider options on Airbnb.com for short-term stays.
