The Research Council’s Innovation Award is given to an individual, business or public entity that has achieved innovation through the strategic use of research. To be eligible, the candidate must have received Research Council funding.
For the award, we are always looking for candidates who are involved in moving boundaries for what is possible within a field. The winner receives honour and glory and half a million kroner. The money will be used for innovation activities.
Your application must be fully complete—submitted before deadline, in the correct format and language, with all mandatory attachments (e.g., project description, CV, partner letters).
Institutional approval (signed-off by your research organization) is mandatory .
Applications are evaluated rigorously under three core criteria :
Scientific Excellence: Is the project pushing the frontiers of knowledge?
Impact: What societal, economic, or environmental benefits—aligned with national/international goals (e.g., UN SDGs)?
Implementation/Feasibility: Does your team, plan, and infrastructure credibly support execution?
Each must be rated 4+ (on a 1–7 scale) to be considered .
Active engagement with international partners supports excellence and impact. Expect external peer-reviewers—mostly international experts .
Demonstrate high ambition and research innovation ("FoU-risk") .
Show how RCN funding serves as a catalyst—triggering partnerships, new infrastructure, or strategic shifts .
Your proposal will go through:
Triage – formal checks for completeness and eligibility .
External Peer Review – assessed for excellence, impact, implementation by 3–6 international experts.
Portfolio Board Decision – RCN portfolio boards weigh scores against strategic relevance and balance—ensuring broader representation and mission alignment .
The RCN may apply tie-breaking lotteries among equally-rated fundable proposals to mitigate bias and diversify funding.
Review panels combine subject specialists and generalists; reviewers are senior international researchers, often professors .
