To conduct research abroad
The scholarship will enable a doctor with a doctorate who is a member of SLS to take a leave of absence after the doctorate to conduct research at a well-reputed institution abroad.
Competence
Eligibility requires membership in the Swedish Medical Association for the current year. Membership fee for the call period with the application deadline of February 1, 2025 must be paid and received by us no later than February 1, 2025. NOTE! Members who belong to one of our member associations do not pay a fee to SLS but directly to the member association.
The scholarship can be applied for by members who are doctors and have completed their doctorate no more than seven years ago, preferably younger researchers. The scholarship can be received a maximum of two times. Please note that ongoing scholarships must be finalised in Researchweb if you wish to apply a second time. A maximum of 12 months is granted per application. The scholarship is only granted for post-docs abroad.
Applications for a post-doc scholarship can be made no earlier than six months before the public defense. A personal invitation must be attached and approval from the ethics review board must be available for the project. A post-doc scholarship cannot be combined with a simultaneous grant for a research stay (travel grant) from SLS. The post-doc research must be conducted full-time for a continuous period of at least three and no more than twelve months per application.
Granting & accounting
Notification of the scholarship will be sent via email in late June. SLS highlights a critical gap: too few doctors continue research after their PhD, leading to a shortage of experienced supervisors .
Applications are stronger when tied to structured clinician-researcher roles, e.g., part-time clinical/academic positions, combined appointments, or mentorship with experienced faculty .
Proposals must clearly articulate how they address patient care or clinical questions within Swedish healthcare .
For travel or theses stipends, there must be a direct link to clinical relevance, conference presentation, research visit, or structured training.
High-quality methods, robust design, and concrete premises like patient recruitment and ethical approval are essential.
Applicants need to show clear infrastructure, resources, and feasibility in terms of clinical integration.
Demonstrating qualifications—such as publications, experience, and formal integration into clinical practice—is critical .
Leadership and collaboration—especially combined clinical-research roles—are highly valued.
Applicants must be current members of SLS or affiliated local medical societies .
Institutional approval via the ResearchWeb portal is required, along with mentor letters and signed project plans.
Calls are published with strict cycles (typically September–February), and manual late submissions are not accepted .
Travel grants must be submitted at least two months before the event or research visit.
SLS encourages proposals aligned with national health objectives and the SDGs, such as climate-health, treatment research, and reducing inequality .
Interdisciplinary projects that bridge clinical practice with public health or policy are valued.
