Application period: January 15, 2026 – March 15, 2026
For medical research during the medical program's summer break
SLS works to increase the proportion of doctors among doctoral students and to ensure that more doctors have their own experience of medical research. This is facilitated if prospective doctors come into contact with ongoing medical research early in their education and are given the opportunity to participate in the practical work themselves. SLS has therefore established a scholarship program, the Swedish Medical Association's introductory scholarship for medical research, to offer interested students in the medical program the opportunity to follow the work of a research group full-time for 1-2 months during the summer break.
Competence
Applicants must be enrolled in the medical program and be a member of SLS in the year the application is submitted. The supervisor must have a doctorate and be a member of SLS in the year the application is submitted.
In order for the application to be reviewed, the membership fee for the student and supervisor must be paid and available to us when the application is submitted.
On My Pages, as a member you can get information about your membership and administer payment of membership fees via invoice. The SLS Introductory Scholarship can be received as long as you are studying, there is no limit to the number of times.
Terms
The scholarship is valid full-time for a minimum of four and a maximum of eight weeks. The scholarship is applied for jointly by the student and the supervisor; the supervisor can only apply with one student. The student must, in collaboration with the supervisor, draw up a plan for the research stay. The application must be accompanied by a certificate from the supervisor stating that the research plan/program stated in the application will be followed and that the supervisor will be available during the time that the student will be "summer researching". The supervisor is responsible for ensuring that relevant ethical permits have been obtained. The higher education institution hosting the research stay is responsible for ensuring that the fellow is insured during the scholarship period. The research may not be included in the degree project.
Contribution
The scholarship amounts to 4,000 SEK per week (maximum total 32,000 SEK) and is paid directly to the student. The student may not have other sources of income during the scholarship period. 20 introductory scholarships are available.
Granting & accounting
Reporting is a requirement. When the scholarship period is over, a report is submitted. The scholarship holders must attend a meeting at SLS in the following autumn to briefly report on their experiences of the research stay and discuss research.
Application
You are welcome to apply via our application system Researchweb. Please note that the application system closes on the last day of application at 24:00.
SLS highlights a critical gap: too few doctors continue research after their PhD, leading to a shortage of experienced supervisors .
Applications are stronger when tied to structured clinician-researcher roles, e.g., part-time clinical/academic positions, combined appointments, or mentorship with experienced faculty .
Proposals must clearly articulate how they address patient care or clinical questions within Swedish healthcare .
For travel or theses stipends, there must be a direct link to clinical relevance, conference presentation, research visit, or structured training.
High-quality methods, robust design, and concrete premises like patient recruitment and ethical approval are essential .
Applicants need to show clear infrastructure, resources, and feasibility in terms of clinical integration.
Demonstrating qualifications—such as publications, experience, and formal integration into clinical practice—is critical .
Leadership and collaboration—especially combined clinical-research roles—are highly valued.
Applicants must be current members of SLS or affiliated local medical societies.
Institutional approval via the ResearchWeb portal is required, along with mentor letters and signed project plans.
Calls are published with strict cycles (typically September–February), and manual late submissions are not accepted .
Travel grants must be submitted at least two months before the event or research visit.
SLS encourages proposals aligned with national health objectives and the SDGs, such as climate-health, treatment research, and reducing inequality .
Interdisciplinary projects that bridge clinical practice with public health or policy are valued.
