The Society of Vascular and Interventional Neurology (SVIN) is pleased to offer the SVIN Pilot Research Grant.
SVIN recognizes the need to stimulate investigator-initiated research programs in the field of vascular and interventional neurology. The SVIN Pilot Research Grant provides a one-year source of funding to help investigators generate preliminary data that will lead to additional funding from other national agencies or foundations. All new or innovative projects with sound medical/scientific justification will be considered under this call for proposals.
This pilot program provides up to $25,000 in grant support dependent on training level ($10,000 for trainee and $25,000 for junior applicants) and anticipates funding up to 5 projects every year. The scientific review panel reserves the right to limit the number of awards based on the priorities of the society. Priority will be given to research proposals that have a high probability of generating preliminary data for future substantial grant applications. A scientific panel will review the applications, and the final award will be subject to approval by the SVIN Board.

Application Preparation
1. 🎯 Direct Relevance to Vascular and Interventional Neurology
SVIN supports research and innovation focused on:
Acute ischemic stroke (AIS) treatment (especially thrombectomy)
Intracerebral hemorrhage, aneurysms, and vascular malformations
Endovascular devices and procedural techniques
Neuroimaging, stroke triage, and tele-neurointervention
✅ Success Predictor: A project that targets stroke, vascular pathology, or interventional innovation in neurology/neurosurgery.
2. 🧑⚕️ Clinician-Scientist or Early Career Focus
SVIN prioritizes:
Fellows, residents, and junior faculty (<5 years from training)
Neurologists, neurosurgeons, and neuroradiologists interested in stroke or neurointervention
Emerging leaders in the field pursuing academic or translational careers
✅ Success Predictor: You’re an early-career vascular neurologist or neurointerventionalist with research ambitions.
3. 🧪 Clinical and Translational Impact
Proposals with the highest likelihood of success often:
Advance real-world clinical practice
Improve patient outcomes in acute neurovascular care
Address health disparities in stroke care access or time-to-treatment
Validate new technologies, devices, or AI/telemedicine platforms
✅ Success Predictor: The project has clear clinical application or contributes meaningfully to stroke systems of care.
4. 🤝 Mentorship and Institutional Support
Competitive applicants show:
A well-defined mentorship team (especially for early-career grants)
Strong letters of support from stroke/neurointervention leaders
Access to clinical trial networks or endovascular labs
✅ Success Predictor: Robust support system + access to patients or preclinical models
5. 🌎 Engagement with SVIN Activities
Stronger applications often come from:
Active SVIN members
Presenters at SVIN Annual Meetings (abstracts, posters, case competitions)
Those involved in SVIN committees, mentorship programs, or Stroke Center collaboratives
✅ Success Predictor: Track record of SVIN involvement or contribution to the neurointerventional community
Program / Award | Audience | Purpose | Amount |
---|---|---|---|
SVIN Foundation Research Grants | Fellows/Junior Faculty | Pilot funding for stroke/endovascular research | ~$10,000–$25,000 |
Early Career Investigator Award | Post-training <5 years | Recognizes high-impact research | Honorarium + recognition |
SVIN Travel Scholarships | Trainees | Travel and presentation at SVIN Annual Meeting | ~$1,000 |
Innovation & Technology Challenge | All levels | Pitching of devices or workflow tech | Seed funding/prizes |
Funding amounts vary and are often seed or pilot level. SVIN also partners with industry and academic consortia for larger collaborative projects.
Expanding thrombectomy access via mobile stroke units or telehealth
Evaluating novel neurointerventional devices (e.g., stent retrievers, aspiration systems)
Optimizing stroke triage algorithms using imaging or AI
Health equity in stroke systems of care (rural or underserved populations)
Antiplatelet/anticoagulation protocols in acute intervention settings
📌 Final Tips for SVIN Proposal Success
Define clear research aims and clinical relevance
Demonstrate how the project advances stroke care or neurointervention
Include a mentored career plan if applying as early-career
Engage with SVIN Annual Meeting for visibility and feedback
