Since 1985, the ASH Scholar Award has helped ease the transition between training and the establishment of an independent career in hematology research by providing partial salary or other support during that critical period. The award offers three funding opportunities for hematology researchers.
Provides up to $150,000 over a two- to three-year period in equal quarterly payments over the award term.
An individual cannot hold concurrent ASH awards.
Application Process
The Scholar Award letter of intent (LOI) and the supporting documents outlined below must be submitted through the ASH online awards system. The LOI is mandatory and will be reviewed for eligibility to submit a full proposal. In addition to the letter of intent, the applicant must submit the following:
Membership in good standing is mandatory at LOI and award stages
Most awards require affiliation with a U.S. or Canadian institution, though some global mechanisms allow broader eligibility .
ASH offers a range of awards—from student scholarships and trainee awards (e.g., HIP, RTAF), to Scholar Awards for fellows and junior faculty, to the Bridge Grant for mid-career researchers
Scholar Award eligibility depends on years since degree and existing funding
The Bridge Grant supports those with recent NIH R01 submissions, offering $150K to sustain continuity .
Proposals should demonstrate scientific rigor, innovation, and clear hematology relevance, be it basic, clinical, translational, or outcomes-focused
Bridge Grants specifically support work in malignant or classical hematology linked to R01 applications .
Scholar Award applicants must be within defined post-degree experience (e.g., 0–5 yrs for Fellow; 8–13 yrs for Junior Faculty) and have no prior major grants (e.g., NIH R01) .
Bridge Grant recipients must show no more than $500K of concurrent research funding .
Most awards require an LOI stage before full proposal .
LOIs must be tightly aligned with award aims and eligibility criteria.
Scholar and Bridge Awards cover salary and research costs; no indirect costs allowed .
Budget proposals should reflect milestone-based use, especially for the Bridge Grant’s one-year, $150K support structure.
Scholar Awards require dedication of ≥75% effort to research plus a senior mentor .
Bridge Grant applicants must submit an Institutional Commitment Letter .
Applications undergo study section review focused on scientific merit and investigator qualifications .
Bridge Grant outcomes show ~70% of recipients later obtain R01 funding .
Bridge Grant deadlines typically fall around May 1, Scholar Award LOIs likely early in the year .
Stay aware of timelines for trainee and HIP awards
Participation in ASH programs (e.g., CRTI, HIP), presentations at the ASH Annual Meeting, and involvement in initiatives like "#Fight4Hematology" strengthen visibility .
