1. Innovative and High-Impact Research
The foundation prioritizes projects that challenge existing paradigms and offer novel approaches to understanding or treating cancer. Emphasis is placed on research that addresses difficult-to-treat cancers, such as pancreatic, lung, liver, sarcomas, esophageal, brain, gastric, bone, and ovarian cancers, as well as rare leukemias and lymphomas.
2. Alignment with SWOG and NCTN Objectives
Proposals that utilize resources from completed SWOG studies or are directly translatable to future clinical trials within SWOG and the National Clinical Trials Network (NCTN) are favored. Demonstrating a clear pathway from your research to clinical application within these networks enhances the proposal's relevance.
3. Potential for Extramural Funding
Projects that can serve as a foundation for securing additional funding from external sources are considered valuable. The ability to leverage initial support from The Hope Foundation to obtain further grants indicates the project's sustainability and broader impact.
4. Feasibility and Clear Objectives
Successful applications present well-defined projects with achievable goals within the proposed timeframe and budget. Clarity in the research plan, including methodology and anticipated outcomes, is crucial.
5. Active Participation in SWOG Activities
Investigators who are active members of the SWOG Cancer Research Network and participate in its activities are given priority. Engagement with SWOG indicates a commitment to collaborative research and aligns with the foundation's support structure.
