This award aims to recognize the importance of good clinical research and to encourage early career investigators in clinical studies in FTD. It is hoped that this program, targeting clinicians who are fellows or new faculty, will foster the development of clinical care providers interested in pursuing careers in patient-oriented research.
Apply by September 9, 2025
This award will consist of a commitment of $65,000 per year for two years, plus a $10,000 per year stipend to support education and research-related costs for a total of $150,000. Timeline
Evaluation and selection
Applications are evaluated by reviewers based on the following criteria:
A successful application should include the following:
Required attachments for application
You must be an AAN member to apply, with most schemes (e.g., education research, clinical training) targeting early-career investigators—within ~5 years of completing a PhD or residency
Clinical research awards emphasize protected research time (≤30% clinical) confirmed by department chair
All proposals are judged on originality, scientific rigor, and feasibility:
Education grants must show innovation in neurology education and strong design with appropriate methodology
Clinical training awards demand a clear hypothesis, detailed statistical plan, and clinical/translational relevance
You need a named primary mentor with experience and protected time (e.g., ≥70% research time for clinical training).
A signed statement from the department chair ensures clinical duties remain limited—critical for clinical awards
A competitive track record includes relevant publications, prior research/abstracts, and an academic trajectory in neurology
Proposals must include realistic budgets and 12-month timelines.
Education Research Grants (≈$10k) and Clinical Training Scholarships (≈$150k over 2 years) require detailed, well-aligned budgets
Strict deadlines: typically September 9 for major awards. Missing mentor/chair letters or formatting errors (font, margins) can lead to disqualification
Follow portal instructions and submission guidelines precisely.
AAN reviewers assess:
Innovation & originality
Methodological soundness and feasibility
Applicant capability and mentorship strength
Significance for neurologic care or education
