All 2025 BSF/SHA Research Award applications must be submitted by Thursday 3rd July 2025 (13:00 BST) in order to be considered further for support. Completed, eligible applications will be forwarded to the GAC in August. Applicants can expect to be notified with the outcome of their applications by the end of December 2025.
A BSF/SHA Research Award is available to anybody wishing to carry out U.K or R.O.I based research into skin disease that disproportionately or uniquely affect people with skin of colour
As part of the award process the BSF's Grants Advisory Committee use the following criteria when reviewing Research Award applications:
The decision of the BSF Grants Advisory Committee for all applications is final.
All grants—from £10K Small Grants to £90K Research Awards—must directly benefit patients with skin disease. The Grants Advisory Committee evaluates applications based on “value to patients with skin disease” first and foremost .
Projects showing immediate clinical relevance are favored, especially small pilot studies .
Applications are scored on scientific rigor and cost-effectiveness—the balance between innovative aims and reasonable budgets .
Equipment requests must be limited (≤50% of Small Grants) and justified; large grants cap at £92K over two years .
Small Grants (£10K, 1 year): Ideal for pilot or feasibility work with ≤50% equipment costs .
Research Awards (£92K over two years): For independent investigators without current large BSF grants; single PI per round .
Studentships (£95K over three years): Must demonstrate both scientific merit and a strong training environment .
Clinician Fellowships (£71K for one year): Require value to dermatology as well as a supportive training environment .
Studentships and Fellowships require clear evidence of a strong training environment; mentorship and departmental backing are scrutinized .
For larger awards, a PI must not hold another active large BSF grant—only one application per PI per round permitted .
Application dates are fixed (e.g., Research/Fellowship/Studentship deadlines in mid-July for 2024), with outcomes around December .
Awards must be activated within 12 months, and mid-term and final reports (both scientific and plain-language) are mandatory for payment .
BSF does not offer feedback on unsuccessful applications, so clarity, rigor, and alignment must be baked in before submission .
Area | Recommendation |
---|---|
Patient benefit | Tie every aim to clinical impact or patient outcomes |
Scientific merit | Ensure rigor with sound methods and realistic budgets |
Proper scaling | Match the project to grant size and career stage |
Training environment | Articulate mentorship and departmental support for fellowship/studentship |
Budget discipline | Limit equipment costs; justify all expenditures |
Administrative compliance | Activate awards timely; submit reports punctually |
Self-review rigor | Polish proposal fully—no feedback available |
🎯 Final Takeaway
To be competitive with the BSF:
Center your research on patient benefit and show immediate dermatologic relevance.
Demonstrate solid science and budget justification—especially keeping equipment costs in check.
Fit the right grant to your career stage and environment: PI vs. student vs. clinician.
Show institutional backing and a clear training plan where relevant.
Follow deadlines and reporting rules meticulously—miss reports and payments won’t proceed.
