The Medical Research Foundation is delighted to be co-funding with the Medical Research Council (MRC) a Clinical Research Training Fellowship (CRTF) in Adolescent Dermatology.
We are inviting applications from clinicians who have the potential to be the research leaders of the future, to support research that will increase understanding of adolescent skin disorders and their treatment. Researchers whose work may lead to better understanding of prevention, treatment or management of these disorders are welcome to apply.
You may like to watch the MRC’s video on the CRTF for an introduction to the scheme.
Funding available
The Medical Research Foundation and the MRC will make the below costs available, for up to three years.
Awards may also be held on a part-time basis to meet personal commitments. Please get in touch with the Research Team at research@medicalresearchfoundation.org.uk if you would like to discuss part-time opportunities further.
The Foundation focuses on underfunded and high-impact medical research, especially in areas like children & youth health, mental health, climate-health, emerging threats, neglected diseases, and early-career innovation .
Projects should demonstrate potential for near-term patient benefit or public-health impact, with clear societal relevance .
Fellowships and prizes are targeted at clinicians and early-career researchers (e.g., Cancer-Pain, Adolescent Dermatology Fellowships) who show promise as research leaders .
Emerging Leaders Prizes support leadership development, training, collaborations, and flexible scientific agenda-setting .
Grants cover direct costs only—staff, consumables, equipment—not indirect, estates, or overheads. Budgets must be realistic and cost-effective .
Applications are evaluated on “value for money”, balancing innovation with prudent use of funds .
PI must secure explicit support letters from Department Heads confirming protected research time and resource availability .
The institution must complete administrative approvals before deadlines (via Flexi-Grant) .
Applications require early planning—PIs, Admin, and Head of Department must sign off before cutoff .
Funds must be activated within six months; unspent or out-of-scope spending isn't permitted .
Grants align with the Foundation’s five-year strategy through 2029, focusing on neglected areas, emerging threats, and young leadership .
Funded research is tracked for impact and career progression, aligning with the aim to support rising research leaders .
Success Factor | What It Entails |
---|---|
Research relevance | Tackle underfunded, high-impact areas and show patient/public benefit |
Early-career PI focus | Align with fellowships and leadership prizes for emerging researchers |
Budget discipline | Request only direct costs; justify every expense |
Institutional support | Protected time, signed letters from leadership and admins |
Compliance & deadlines | Complete all approvals and submit via the portal on time |
Strategic fit & measurables | Tie projects to Foundation strategy and define impact metrics |
✅ How to Strengthen Your Application
Align with strategic priorities: Emphasize focus on children’s mental health, adolescent dermatology, cancer pain, or other underfunded fields.
Emphasize career trajectory: Show how the funding will accelerate your emergence as a research leader.
Carefully build the budget: Include only what is essential and justify each item.
Secure institutional buy-in early: Get Head of Department letters ensuring protected research time.
Plan administrative sign-off: Coordinate with your institution so approvals are ready before the deadline.
Set impact benchmarks: Define how you'll measure short- and long-term outcomes aligned with the Foundation goals.
🧭 Final Message
Success with the Medical Research Foundation means proposing patient-focused, under-supported research led by emerging investigators, backed by strong budgets and institutional support, all tightly aligned to the Foundation’s strategy.
The pre-doctoral CRTF supports clinicians, including (but not limited to) medics, surgeons, dentists, clinical psychologists, public health specialty trainees, allied health professionals, nurses, midwives and veterinarians, to undertake a PhD or other higher research degree.
The post-doctoral CRTF provides a route for post-doctoral applicants who achieved their PhD some time ago but who have not been research active since due to clinical training commitments to reacquire research skills.
We welcome applications to this fellowship from clinicians whose research will address the questions surrounding skin disorders of relevance to adolescents, such as acne, eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, alopecia and vitiligo. We have identified this as a research area of high need, but low investment. For more details of this opportunity please visit the MRC’s Jointly-Funded CRTF page.
Full eligibility and remit details are available on the MRC’s webpage above. Please visit this page for information on remit, suitability, funding provided and deadlines.
