Host: Dept. of Pathology & Clinical Bioinformatics Unit, ErasmusMC, The Netherlands
By Prof. Dr. Ing. Peter J. van der Spek:
As a geneticist and bioinformatician I study how variations in our genome contribute to the differences between health and disease. Moreover, we have learned from pharmacogenetics studies that various different genetic variants also can contribute to therapy response and drug metabolism. Sharing therapy response data is therefore essential to optimize and roll out these novel personalized healthcare strategies in day to day clinical practice. In order to implement Personalized Medicine we need to use the Whole genome sequence for diagnostics in order to decide which targeted treatment is most optimal for a given patient at a specific point in time of the disease process. Insight in molecular pathways that can be activated or repressed by biologicals (agonists or antibody based antagonists is the modern way to treat disease.
About Prof. Dr. Ing. Peter J. van der Spek:
Peter J. van der Spek has been appointed as professor and head of the department of bioinformatics at the Erasmus MC. He obtained his doctoral degree in 1995 in the field of molecular carcinogenesis by cloning cancer predisposition genes.
Van der Spek has 6 years of pharmaceutical experience from Akzo-Nobel and Johnson & Johnson and holds several international academic appointments in Japan, Australia, and the USA. The bioinformatics group at the Erasmus MC focuses on the support of datamining and analysis. This expertise is used for fundamental research, molecular diagnostics, molecular imaging, (forensic) molecular biology and support of clinical trials. Erasmus MC is one of the largest medical centers in the Netherlands.
Van der Spek runs an immunological research program which provides the biological and technological basis for the bioinformatics group. It concentrates on the way the immune system and the genome as a whole contribute to the evolution, development, structure, and function of vital organs in our body.

2-4 week Personalized Medicine traineeships at ErasmusMC
The Erasmus University Medical Center (Erasmus MC) based in Rotterdam, Netherlands, affiliated with Erasmus University and home to its faculty of medicine, is the "largest and one of the most authoritative scientific University Medical Centers in Europe." Furthermore, the hospital is the largest of the eight university medical centers in the Netherlands, both in terms of turnover and number of beds. The Erasmus MC ranks #1 of the top European institution in clinical medicine and #20 in the world according to the Times Higher Education rankings.
ErasmusMC offers 2-4 week personalized medicine internships illustrating the power of molecular diagnostics followed by targeted treatment strategies.
During the internship complex genetic cases will be discussed to illustrate the variable clinical presentation linked to specific perturbed molecular pathways underlying auto-immune and auto-inflammatory disorders.
The intracellular metabolism in monocytes, macrophages and dendritic cells (DCs) appears crucial for the function of these critical controllers of innate and adaptive immunity. They undergo profound metabolic reprogramming in response to environmental cues, such as hypoxia or nutrient alterations, but also upon triggering by danger signals and cytokines. Therefore, metabolic alterations in monocytes, macrophages and DCs appear crucial to maintain immune homeostasis and metabolic dysregulation could lead to disease pathology. You will be part of a multidisciplinary team comprising of internists, pathologists immunologists, molecular biologists and bioinformaticians studying patients suffering from auto-immune and or auto-inflammatory disorders.

This program allows Merit Applications. If you successfully are awarded a merit application - Trialect will take care of all bench and service fees, but you will have to take care of travel and accommodation. All applications will be scrutinized under the merit category. Considering 50 million health professionals around the world, the chances of getting selected under the merit category would be very low.
All physicians and biomedical scientists from around the world can apply
