James Cook University Hospital, Department of Neurosurgery
The Department of Neurosurgery at James Cook University Hospital is a tertiary referral unit based in the Tees Valley surrounded by beautiful countryside and hills as well as heavy industry. Serving a population of about 1.3 million, this department provides comprehensive neurosurgical and spinal services to the region. The hospital also is home to the regional major trauma center. We also happen to be one of the few spinal specialist rehabilitation units in the UK. The unit is extremely ‘lean’ and ‘efficient’ – functioning with 18 ward beds, 8 high dependency beds, and intensive care beds depending on availability and need. There are 8 attending/consultant neurosurgeons who provide services in all aspects of adult cranial and spinal neurosurgery. As a unit, the yearly turnover is about 1200 cases including spinal, tumors, cerebrovascular, skull base and trauma. There is two dedicated neurosurgery operating theatres every day along with one spinal surgery operating theatre. In addition, emergencies can be operated on emergency lists. There are seven senior registrars and 5 junior trainees that cover the wards and the service – they are the backbone of the neurosurgical unit. Trainees assist regularly in the operating lists and outpatient clinics. They also have dedicated teaching sessions twice including radiology teaching and curriculum-based teaching. In addition, further teaching opportunities exist at the several multidisciplinary meetings covering spine, tumors, cerebrovascular and syringomyelia/Chiari malformations. Trainees have a regional training day with guest speakers, every quarter. This center has an excellent reputation for teaching and training.
Overall, we can provide students/fellows with a very comprehensive exposure to Neurosurgery and trauma in a collegial and constructive environment. The general case-mix for a typical week could be:
Can Be Customized
A brief introduction/induction will be followed by gradual assimilation into the trainee group. The fellows will have the opportunity to read the registrar’s induction handbook. Fellows will have an opportunity to attend all teaching rounds/MDTs and attend morning handover meetings. They will be able to shadow registrars during their day to day activities to get a better feel for the departmental working. They will be encouraged to take up a short clinical audit/research project and complete it during their stay. Depending on the quality and volume of data, further dissemination in conferences or publications will be considered. Subject to passing the occupational health clearances, they will be able to observe in theatres. Hands-on assisting will not normally be possible as that requires registration with the General Medical Council. The fellows will be able to shadow all the consultants in the department so that they are exposed to a wide variety of pathology. There are plenty of training opportunities which the fellows may be able to utilize to the best effect as they feel fit. At the end of the fellowship, they will have a testimonial from the department detailing the time spent and the academic and clinical activities engaged in.
Accommodation can be arranged in the hospital residences or in the Premier Inn Hotel which is opposite the hospital. No transportation is required – these accommodations are within walking distance.
