The Department performs a high volume of hip and knee primary, complex primary and revision cases.
Techniques utilised: (HIP) Mini posterior, Anterior, Extended Troxhanteric Osteotomies for revision THA (when necessary). Tumor prostheses when necessary. Subtrochanteric shortening for DDH.
(KNEE): Mechanical and measured functional TKAs (medial pivot).
PJIs: Two stage revisions, special protocols for diagnosis (including NGS) and treatment.

The 2nd Department of Orthopaedic Surgery of the National & Kapodistrian University of Athens Medical School at the Konstantopouleio General Hospital Nea Ionia, Athens, Greece is a busy facility focusing mainly in arthroplasty and adult reconstruction and level 3 trauma care with no-polytrauma, no spine and no-head injury trauma. We are a referral center for Periprosthetic Joint Infections.
The Department performs a high volume of hip and knee primary, complex primary and revision cases. There are 30 in-patients beds available for Orthopaedic patients. There are 5 standard 8-4pm operating theatres available weekly and trauma is performed after hours. The out-patient department is busy consisting of fracture clinics and specialized Orthopaedic clinics including osteoporosis, arthroplasty, sports medicine, etc.
Objectives of the Training Program at the 2nd Department of Orthopaedic Surgery of the National & Kapodistrian University of Athens Medical School will be tailored to meet the individual needs of each selected trainee but in general, the main objective is to expose him/her to the full spectrum of arthroplasty and adult reconstruction that are routinely performed. The Fellow will be assigned on a rotating basis to each highly trained Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeons.
The Fellow will be expected to attend and actively participate in all Rounds, including Arthroplasty Rounds, Trauma Rounds, Grand Rounds every Wednesday and M-M Rounds. We train >100 medical school students all over the academic year and fellows are welcome to join in. Most of the professors are the US or Canada, trained.
There is a possibility to scrub-in during surgeries pending hospital allowance. The opportunity to participate in the Research Projects (including Multicenter studies on new anticoagulation drugs) of the Department is available and welcome and will be discussed ad hoc with the Fellow. The Fellow is expected to present at least one lecture during his / her tenure. The fun and experience is guaranteed.
The Faculty perform surgeries in Evgenideion Hospital (a private facility owned by the University). Fellows will attend those surgeries as well.
Number of Procedures: Approx 400-500 tkas and THAs per year; 60+ Revisions THA and TKA; 300-400 fractures (mainly hip fxs in elderly pts); 30 knee arthroscopies
