The program is purely an observership/visiting scholar experience and does not involve direct patient care.
This visiting fellowship offers participants a unique opportunity to gain hands-on observational experience and academic mentorship in clinical hepatology, gastroenterology, and public health leadership. The program is designed for physicians, researchers, and clinician-scientists aiming to deepen their clinical knowledge, strengthen their research acumen, and understand global strategies for liver disease management and eradication.
Participants will have access to outpatient and inpatient clinical sessions, research discussions, educational meetings, and mentorship sessions under Dr. Pan’s direct supervision.
During the fellowship, participants will begin with an introduction to clinical hepatology, including observational exposure to outpatient liver clinics focused on chronic liver diseases such as hepatitis B, hepatitis C, and NAFLD/NASH. Fellows will attend multidisciplinary discussions on liver cancer (HCC) surveillance and cirrhosis management protocols.
As the program progresses, there will be an emphasis on viral hepatitis research and public health strategies, covering topics such as prevention of perinatal transmission of hepatitis B and an overview of public health frameworks developed by WHO and CDC. Participants will also have the opportunity to observe clinical trial designs, participate in clinical research discussions, and receive mentorship in academic writing and publication strategies.
Those interested in gastroenterology will have the option to engage in observational experiences within outpatient GI clinics, gain exposure to diagnostic endoscopy procedures (observation only), and attend academic rounds and case conferences led by NYU Langone’s gastroenterology division.
Finally, for participants selecting an extended 4-week track, the fellowship offers mentorship in medical leadership and policy development. This includes insights into the development of clinical practice guidelines (e.g., AASLD Hepatitis B guidelines) and mentoring on how to organize CME (Continuing Medical Education) programs. Participants will also receive personalized career guidance aimed at building leadership roles within professional societies and academic institutions.
The fellowship experience is highly customizable, and a final schedule will be created in consultation with Dr. Pan based on the applicant’s stated objectives.
